Possible FA signings because of OC & DC history

Not every player on the team can be a super star. The DL alone needs 1600 more snaps if the Dolphins are switching to a 4-3 from a 3-4 AND losing guys like Soliai, Langford and Merling via free agency. How are you going to fill those snaps, within the confines of the salary cap, where the Dolphins are already nearly at the cap?

Are we now playing fantasy football where we can just casually declare that we should sign Mario Williams and Paul Soliai, and then draft Markelle Martin. Oh yeah, let's also grab Matt Flynn and draft Ryan Tannehill (to be sure), and then definitely we gotta sign Carl Nicks and Doug Free, while we're at it.

You mean we arent allowed to do that??? crap... there goes PLAN A lol

not every free agent signing needs to be hot garbage either...find a happy middle at least...

It doesn't matter anyway, this was merely a list of guys that have connections to the staff and are therefore at a higher likelihood of being signed by the Dolphins. As I said in the Reggie Nelson commentary, "Ultimately, it doesn't matter what we think. It matters what they think."

Several of these guys though, with the exception of Frostee Rucker as I've been told there are things in his past that make Brandon Marshall look chivalrous, I would insist would be good signings for Miami given the money they'll command (which is not much). I don't agree with 'hot garbage' designations for the likes of Manny Lawson, Reggie Nelson and Frostee Rucker (unless you're talking about Rucker's personality which may indeed by 'hot garbage'). Certainly Scott Wells isn't anything even close to 'hot garbage'.

One I forgot to put in there, because the 'connection' concept is kind of weak on him (Kevin Coyle coached secondary at Cincy, not offensive line or even offense), is Anthony Collins the Right Tackle. He lost his job to Andre Smith this year, essentially on a directive from the top (Mike Brown) that said you need to find a spot for him to start. When Collins played in place of Smith late in the year, he played better than him.

The bottom line though is Miami has personnel needs, and not a lot of money to fill them. In free agency, unless you identify specific opportunities like I identified in Antwan Barnes a year ago, you generally get what you pay for. With Barnes, I'd been told exactly why he's not all that coveted, I'm just comfortable with the risk...so even with him, you do get what you paid for because there was a hefty amount of risk involved.

I think of guys like Manny Lawson, Reggie Nelson and Anthony Collins as exactly the 'happy middle' that you want. But if you've got any others, absolutely I'd like to hear about them, because given our constraints, the pickings look pretty slim.

One possible low budget option - FB Quinn Johnson, drafted and started for GB while Philbin was there. Played for Tennessee last year, is a FA.

He is more of a hammer like Kuhn in GB, versus a finesse player like Clay.

someone i've brought up prior and walrus brought up today is koy biermann...to me thats the kind of smart money underrated signing you can make...an under the radar one...

i can see what you're saying regarding the connections with the staff and i get thats where your list comes from but i'd be afraid ireland would pay some of those guys real guaranteed money when he's almost bidding against himself similar to the gibril wilson and jake grove signings where i swear we were bidding against ourselves in those contracts...i just don't want to see any dumb stuff like that for reggie nelson...

i think collins makes sense and will be cheap and lawson should be cheap...so offer them 1 year deals with incentive clauses and see if they bite...if not...later

also whats the scoop on how the chargers got antwan barnes for that cheap 3 years and less than $5 mil contract...that kid would have been perfect for us as a nickle rush lb

for some reason i get the feeling reggie nelson thinks he's in for a pay day...i just hope its not us if thats the case

Antwan Barnes has off field issues that are relatively known about by teams. I can't confirm that he's in the NFL's drug program but I think he probably is.

Personally I don't care. I don't think his next offense is going to result in a lifetime ban or anything, and we're talking like $1.5 million a year. I'd take that chance. And he's from FIU, he wanted to come back here.

I doubt Reggie Nelson is getting Gibril Wilson money. If that's what he wants I agree, let him walk. Manny Lawson got a 1 year, $3 million deal last year. I'd give him the same terms on a 3 year deal, personally. I've seen enough to know what he brings to the table and be comfortable with it.

Collins I think is another one to watch out with on drugs. He was at Jerome Simpson's house when the police raided it. Collins issued a statement saying it was wrong place, wrong time, that he was just there visiting and hanging out with Jerome. The police agreed, didn't charge him with anythning. But there's something about that, that tickles my memory. Didn't Anthony Collins test positive at the Combine? Maybe I'm totally remembering that wrong.

With Nelson, I can't help thinking that if Coyle can turn him into a reasonably good player then one has to wonder what he could do with Chris Clemons, who is already a serviceable free safety.

Yeremiah Bell is a guy I think walks this season. Turn the job over to Reshad Jones and draft another guy in the 5th round with Culver as the main backup. That should save some $$. What was Will Allen making this year? If it's anything more than the league minimum I'd expect him to get his walking papers and maybe even then. Jimmy Wilson seems born to play in the slot and you can find a veteran out there cheaper than Allen to round things out.

allen got waived and came back i'm guessing after the first few weeks for the league minimum...he was on the street so i can't see them having to part with any guaranteed money to get him back...i think it was like $1.5 mil or so

personally i'd bring him back one more year and give jimmy wilson more corner run period in the hopes that he's ready to take on a major roll in 2013...

i'd also tell bell to take a cut to at least half his $5 mil number or walk the plank...

Let's get the high profile free agents to sign for peanuts the way Thad got Golden Arm to sign on blue mountain state

The one player from the group talked about I would be interested in is RT Anthony Collins from the bungles.. I remember if I am not mistaken he was drafted out of Kansas and wanted the fins to take him in later rounds on that draft year... he did start I think for 2 years at RT and was pretty solid.

i don't recall collins testing positive at the combine...i might be wrong though...i just remember thinking when he came out of kansas he was a soft player...not really what i was looking for in a right tackle physicality wise...wasnt much of a fan...more a finesse guy

could sam baker be on the outs in atlanta...i wanna say he lost his starting job this season...that might be someone to keep an eye on if that matters to you...i've never been much on him but he's better than colombo i don't care what side he plays on

My guys are Collins and Lawson. I'd go for Goldson at FS.

Since we are going hybrid I am pretty darn sure we will get Soliai resigned and I think we will go with Flynn and say Collins and Lawson. They won't cost much, Soliai and Flynn will.

Than you draft a DE, a G, and TE. Covers lots of holes.
