Hey all -
I rarely post here but I've been lurking for a while. I'd definitely join premium/VIP if it weren't for $36 a year, and my unsaid commitment to another website that follows the fins ( I break down things for the people there, much like your Boomer/CK.. although they are better than I am, to be frank )
Anyways, I've been a big Parcells fan since I started following the NFL, so you can imagine my face when I read he was actually coming down to Miami.
Here are two free agency pick ups I really look for us to go after, some of which you may not know, but they have a history with Bill Parcells, and they seem like his type of players.
First and foremost, every Phin fan knows TIght End is a dire need. Draft seems to be the main desire for most of the people here, but I don't feel the same way. Ben Troupe TE Out of the University of Florida, drafted top of the 2nd round by the Tennessee Titans, is a UFA who is 25 going into his 4th season of the NFL. He had a bad year this year, and it's a bit confusing as to why he played behind Bo Scaife. He has reliable hands, runs fairly crisp routes, and has the size/speed ratio that Bill Parcells covets. At 6'4, 270 lbs, he runs a 4.5/4.6 and has very good blocking technique. Hes a fantastic combination of blocking/receiving.. better than any TE in this draft, I believe. In 2005 he was actually targeted, where he caught 55 passes and 4 touchdowns. He'd start on this team almost immediately, and he can be had for a very modest contract. You may remember Ben Troupe for being the guy in Orange and Blue who was able to hurdle cornerbacks while looking like a lineman!
His relationship with Bill Parcells is strictly professional in the sense that he was never on a Parcells team. In the 2004 NFL Draft, Bill Parcells went after Ben Troupe when it became apparent he was going to fall to the 2nd round. Sadly for Bill, the Tennessee Titans would not trade down as they had their eye on the very same player. Tennessee is not a very good fit, and while he had a bad game against San Diego ( He whiffed on a block that ended up stopping Lendale in the backfield, forcing a punt ) he has shown that with the right technique coaching, he could be a force.
The second player is Abe Elam, SS from Kent State University ( Also Notre Dame ) who was recently with the New York Jets. He's a hard hitting safety that was brought in the second week of the season, and fought his way into the starting role his last 6 games of the season for the Jets. He had 55 tackles, and was a very impressive special teams player.
Bill Parcells brought him into the NFL after he went undrafted and kept him on the squad for a full year. Once parcells was gone in Dallas, so was Abe. He was signed for a very short time in Miami, being released as soon as Miami was able to sign Lance Shulters. Abe is a very physical and athletic safety, who is very good against the run and mediocre at pass coverage skills. He brings a lot to the table on special teams, and considering he knows the Dallas system very well, which is what I expect Parcells to bring in, he looks like a guy thatd be a no brainer unless New York offers him a big deal ( in terms of him )
He's also a local boy, from West Palm Beach, Florida. His kids and his fiancee live down here, so Miami has a definite advantage in that aspect. He has some off the field baggage, but every single coach he has worked with has had nothing but fantastic things to say about him, including Bill Parcells who was key in getting Eric Mangini to sign Elam.
When Training Camp starts, Id be very shocked if neither of these players were in Aqua and Orange.
