I'm really disapointed in our safety play this year, but also see needs at NT, ILB, WR, and perhaps improvement at TE.

Of course getting the "right" players not only on the field but in the locker room too has its effects.

So, who in free agency this off season, could really impact this team and make Miami better?

ill give you one clearly: Brandon Marshall..but ony if he was a player that miami would actually sign, hes too much of diva for parcells to sign but the obvious talent and improvement he would contribute is there

You have to look at realistic options in FA. None of the big-time receivers (Austin, Marshall, Jackson) will ever see the open market. Mostly because their teams would franchise them, but also because without a new CBA, they don't become unrestricted.

If you look at potential options, here's what you have.

WR-Antonio Bryant, Malcom Floyd, Kevin Walter, not much else to choose from.
TE-Tony Scheffler, Ben Watson, Bo Scaife, maybe Owen Daniels as the Texans have several other key FA's to focus on (Dunta Robinson, DeMeco Ryans).

NT-Justin Bannan, Aubreyo Franklin (likely franchised), Ryan Pickett (could be available as Packers have Raji in the wings).

ILB-Tim Dobbins, Karlos Dansby (could be franchised), Ryans (likely a pipedream, but you never know), Derrick Johnson, Kirk Morrison (not sure how he'd translate to a 3-4).

OLB-Shawne Merriman (very expensive), Thomas Howard (again, not a typical 3-4 backer), Aaron Kampman (didn't make smooth transition to 3-4 backer)

FS- Not many options, although if Darren Sharper could play anywhere near to what he did this season, he would be a nice option.

I personally, would go for Bryant, Bannan and break the bank for Dansby if he became available. Dobbins might be a nice fallback option.

I would like to get Dansby, and I do not believe he can not be franchised again as he has been the last two years and is refusing to talk to the Cards about a contract.

Antoine Beathea is on my wishlist, although if it is an uncapped year, we probably wont get him

I am hoping for any combination of Dansby, Hampton, and Bryant as our offseason free agent signings. This way when it comes to the first three rounds of the draft we can select the best player available weather it be a DT, LB, WR or FS.

Agreed on the WR's although I wouldn't touch Bryant. He's really not that much better than what we have.

You are also forgetting a ILB that is one that I would target - DJ Williams. Denver has to sign Elvis and Marshall to big contracts, they won't put the money into DJ as well.

no options for FS?
What about Bethea? Collins? Atogwe? those are BEAUTIFUL options

A player can be franchised as often as the team opts to do so. Generally, teams either work out a contract with the player or agree not to franchise the player again. But it's all voluntary: Dansby can operate under the franchise tag for the rest of his career if the Cards decide to keep applying it to him, and there's not a damn thing he can do about it.

That depends on the player. Vincent Jackson is the most likely of the three to be franchised, but that's still not a guarantee: after all, Shawne Merriman is scheduled to be a free agent as well. Same thing with Brandon Marshall: Elvis Dumervil is scheduled to be a free agent, so the Broncos would have to decide which to tag. Of course, there's always the possibility they work out a contract with one player and tag the other.

Miles Austin is the least likely of the three WRs to get franchised in my view, but you never know.

but also because without a new CBA, they don't become unrestricted.

Again, depends on the player. And I think it's safe to assume, going into 2010, that there won't be a new CBA.

We have to many Kevin walters on this team

Teams will be able to keep more players if there is no CBA because teams will have additional tags to work with.

Read up on the rules if there is no CBA to see that.

And of course, some of those guys you listed wouldn't have even have accrued enough seasons to even be FA's.. They would be Restricted FA's... thus the team still holds their rights - unless a team greatly overpays with high draft picks.

Even in the uncapped year, teams have only one franchise tag. They gain a second transition tag, but the transition tag is almost never used: the last (and only) time I can recall the transition tag being used is when the Steelers used it on Max Starks a couple of years ago, and it was a bizarre decision even then.

So, yes, teams like the Chargers and Broncos still need to decide which player they'd rather franchise and which player they'd rather attempt to work out a long-term contract with. This means that some players can slip through the cracks.

Again, it depends on the player. I'm going by KFFL's 2010 free agent list, which while slightly outdated (doesn't incorporate DeMarcus Ware's new contract, for example) is still a pretty decent source. As for which individual players will hit free agency, once again, it depends.

I talk about guys like Barrett Ruud, Ryan Clark, and Nick Collins as free agency targets because they would be likely targets even without a CBA. Ruud would become a restricted free agent even without a CBA, and the Bucs are an exceptionally cheap team: they might not match any halfway decent offer made to him, and could allow him to walk. Ryan Clark has accrued the necessary time in the league and would still be a UFA regardless of whether or not there's a new CBA. Nick Collins is somewhat possible because the Packers are apparently not interested in extending him, which means they might not match an offer tendered to Collins in restricted free agency.

We'll get the cheaper less known guys who everyone will get all excited about because they'll be known as "Parcells type" players.....Until next September when they prove to be colossal busts.
