ive watched the steelers and patriots and heard many commentators and former coaches state that the understated, non-headline catching front 3 are the key to both defences and in general the 3-4 scheme.

with this in mind and i know its if,if,if, but IF, as i believe we draft with frist 3 picks a NT, could we potentially have the TOP front 3 in footy.

I think our DE, langford and Merling (with a full preseason and no injuries) plus the rotation of starks is really exciting. I also want to mention NT P Solai who seemed to penetrate and make plays late in the season (hopefully the light has come on).

With this in mind .........If (if,if,if again) D thomas works out, Did we have the best overall draft in 2008?

i would love for soliai to be successful. it would greatly expediate our development. by leaps and bounds.

puff puff give, man! otherwise you start writing stuff like that...

add potentially the best safety tandem in the league to that list

Right now i'd say our dline isn't even a top 2 in the AFC East. Holliday was a big loss, imo. Merling and Langford are too big of wildcards. Soliai is garbage (7 tkls in 22 career games doesn't cut it). I also think Ferguson is overrated. Don't get me wrong, he's decent but we need someone younger, bigger and more powerful in the middle. Starks is a good rotation guy but nothing more. We need another DE, a promising young NT, and at least a year or two of experience before this group can really start to tap its potential.

So we could potentially be a top 3 D front if we draft an NT that we have no idea who it is and have never seen play before in the NFL?

Did any of you guys actually read the post?

Normanii, if we draft a NT on the first day and that player shows as much potential as Langford and Merling did this season, then a couple of years down the line, there's no reason in the world why we couldn't have the best front three in footy.

And if Thomas works out to the extent that some are hyping, I think there's little doubt we had the best '08 draft.

Some people should try reading the post and answer the questions rather than just reading the title and quick replying.

Soliai will step up this year, but we need to go to the draft for another NT. need to have two to rotate & keep fresh.
unfortunately, according to the pundits, there are only a couple of guys out there that fit the bill. do have several freak DT's that could be converted. we shall see. Ferguson should have another couple of years to play the game & school the new guys.

Not real sure what "footy" is, but unless that is some new game where everyone sits around and play footsie then I am saying NO. I mean I guess you can say the word "potential" can allow anything then yes. But then you could also say our front three has the potential to be the worst in football. I mean I guess you can say Miami has the "POTENTIAL" with global warming affecting the rest of the east coast, to become the coldest city in the league. But I wouldn't put money on it.

At least you answered his question.

I really am comfortable with our front 3. Merling and Langford will improve a lot this offseason after having a years worth of experience in a 3-4. It really take time to adjust to a 3-4 sytem if you've played in a four man front your entire football career. These guys play a two gap sytem which means they have to make a read on run plays on which hole to attack. It can be a very hard concept to get used to. I remember Merling saying that he was so focused on learning the run scheme that it was affecting his pass rushing ability. I think Merling and Langford will become studs as 3-4 DEs.

Jason was a very strong contributor last season and played very well IMO. He is getting older and has maybe one or two good seasons left in him. Soliai was good when he played, but the guy was suspended for two games and the first Baltimore game he missed really hurt because Ferguson got hurt. I think NT can be addressed either this year or next, but I think Soliai is a very capable backup. Overall I agree with your opinion that these three are one of the better front three in the NFL, but you still have to put the Pats, the Steelers, and maybe San Diego, but they lost Olgshanksy (spelling?) but Williams is still very good.
