Per Jeff Darlington's Twitter doctors have prescribed him meds in order to try to avoid him having his gall bladder removed. They're trying to get him on the field sooner rather than later.

Is this the right move? In 2013 I don't think gall bladder surgery is all that invasive. Wouldn't he just miss a game or 2?

All surgery is invasive. Try the meds.

Its nothing, I just had mine out. I left the hospital within an hour and was back to work in 3 days. Its a piece of cake.

my friend had his gallbladder removed and had pancreatitis as a complication which can happen. was in the hospital for a month. avoid surgery always if possible.

I took my gall bladder out and bullied the doctor with it. Same day proceedure.

I'm another who just had his Gallbladder out. Surgery on Friday, working on Monday. Could have worked the next day. I would say football would be an option within two weeks from the surgery I had. I know some of you are saying avoid surgery at all costs, but you are more likely to have complications from leaving a pickled gall bladder in, than issues from this surgery generally speaking. Of course we don't know exactly what is wrong with Pouncey's, and I'm sure his doctors know the best course of treatment for him.

It could come out no prob using the davinci robot and only a single incision. Pretty cool to watch actually. The concern I would have is tenderness in the area and internal sutures popping out under the pressure of playing football. 2 weeks missed or so unless a suture pops and nobody notices, then you would have severe internal bleeding. Meds for 6-8 weeks? Why not?

You never know what can happen; staff infections are more and more common, not to mention MRSA ... Stay away from the knife if you can.

Whew!!!

I was woried he had left the team and went into seclusion because he was bullid by the Long Snapper

I got my gall bladder removed in 2005. They do it through arthroscopic surgery. They make three small incisions in your side and pull it out....it is like a balloon. I have no scars from it and two days later I felt close to 100%, just a little sore but no real pain. I also had shoulder surgery a year later and the pain and down time were much worse from it...it tooks months to feel better and regain the strength. Pouncey should have done it during the bye week and he probably wouldn't have missed a single game.

Roman/Finfanpat/Anyone - Excuse my ignorance, what is the root cause of gall bladder dysfunction? Is it linked to any other issues?

My guess is he's got gall bladder stones. And in case you're wondering, no, it's probably not because of the drugs Richie Sr. kept going on about.

Major cause is diet related. There is also probably a genetic component to it but no definitive link to that. The surgery itself is usually a straightforward procedure that is done laparoscopically with 3-4 small incisions (sometimes 1) depending on the surgeon. Usually it's a same day procedure, but it depends on how inflamed the gallbladder is. My guess is from the fact pouncey missed a game from this is that it will be a fairly difficult surgery due to tremendous inflammation. Not uncommon, but complications increase with more difficult procedures

the main issues is that he would miss a couple weeks minimum due to the incisions needing to heal. If he came back before that, there is a very high chance he would develop a hernia which would mean more surgery in the future. Pain after the surgery really isn't the issue post-op. It would be the activity restriction.

my guess would be antibiotics and painkillers with diet modification for the short term with offseason surgery. However if a stone works it's way out of the gb into the duct system, that changes the entire picture.
