The thing with Pouncey is that just prior to this season he was still using a cane to walk with after his surgery. That was a serious surgery that takes a long time to fully recover from. The fact that he is able to play with any level of NFL capability is a tribute to him and to coach Gase.
I remember when Julius Peppers played for the Bengals and came down with mononucleosis. It sapped his strength and stamina for the rest of the season, showing in reduced field performance, and it took another season on another team before he was back at full capability. Mononucleosis can be a terribly debilitating disease. Major surgeries, even with good results, often take a long time to heal. Even Cam Newton has taken a long time to fully recover from his shoulder surgery. Too bad his recovery was fully completed on the game when we played him.
The question isn't "should we cut Pouncey?"; the question is "who will we replace him with that is an improvement?". This is true for every position on the team. The idea that there are NFL caliber players available to us that are as good or better replacements for any position on our team is a child's fantasy. There is a focused competition for good FA's. There are fewer, but better, opportunity's for trades when there is a team with a lot of depth at a given position. The draft is a crap shoot. Getting 50% of your draft selections on the field in two years is a success for any team in the NFL.
Why aren't we focusing on how to best use what we have and developing a 3 year plan for drafting, Free Agency and trading, in that order. I suspect that is exactly what the Dolphins have been doing and plan to continue to do. Not glamorous, but a solid way to build a team.
I am beginning to suspect that Fantasy Football has caused many folks here to think you can pick almost any player you want at any time to establish a Fantasy Team. That's great, but it is called Fantasy Football for a very good reason.
