I know Power rankings can be convoluted, overblown, or irrelevant, so take it for what is worth:

Preseason: 20 | Last week: 16 | ESPN.com Power Ranking since 2002

The Miami Dolphins are one of the hottest teams in the NFL. They improved to 3-0 in December with a landmark 24-20 victory over the New England Patriots.

The Dolphins' win could propel them into the final wild-card spot in the AFC. The Dolphins control their own destiny and need to win their final two games against the Buffalo Bills (5-9) and New York Jets (6-8).

I think if you took their recent trajectory into account, they would be ranked even higher.

10. It's not an exaggeration to say their win over the Patriots came on the shoulders of the best game of Ryan Tannehill's career -- 25-of-37 for 312 yards and three touchdowns (to zero interceptions), with a sparkling average of 8.43 yards per attempt. When the Texas A&M product got rid of the ball, the offense moved. Too often this season, the Dolphins did not accomplish that, with a less effective Tannehill under center. He came into the game averaging 6-plus yards per toss. Now, if we can just get the sack total down. Tannehill's been sacked a league-high 51 times this season -- that's getting hammered.

But says this under the Patriots rank...

7. Not sure you can blame their loss to the Dolphins on Rob Gronkowski's absence. The Patriots gained 453 yards without him, converting nine of 17 third-down attempts in the process. The secondary has to play a lot better -- those guys made Ryan Tannehill look like Tom Brady on Sunday. He's more of a Tony Eason type.

Dude just compared Tannehill to Tony Eason....

Such hypocrisy. In one breath praise and in the other insult.

Convoluted is not a word that comes to mind. I can't picture banks and banks of 1960's computers beeping and blinking away for hours to spit out its "rankings". Instead I picture a guy with a greasy bucket of chicken by his laptop, in his pajamas, while Duck Dynasty plays in the background. Nonsensical is probably more fitting. Rankings are ridiculous. "Power Rankings" are ludicrous.

Actually they're not, in my opinion. The function of a "power ranking" should be to determine the relative strength of teams based on the weighting of variables that are stable and reflective of ability, while controlling for the variables that tend to be random and fluctuating.

Now, is that what ESPN is doing here? Who knows. But don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

We've been underdogs lately and it's been working out for us so lets stay the course!

That's ESPN's sucky ass rankings. Miami is #10 on NFL.com.

With the many rankings and the different ways they come up with the rankings, yes, I would say thay are convoluted.
