If Marcus Thigpen is going to keep his job as Miami’s punt and kick returner, he’s going to have to earn it.
Thigpen — along with receivers Damian Williams, rookie Jarvis Landry and Glades Central grad Rantavious Wooten — were participating in return drills at minicamp today.
It’ll be tough to really gauge who has the upper hand until training camp and preseason. But the most likely candidates remain Thigpen and Williams, who took over as Tennessee’s punt and kick returner late last season.

- The offense improved today after struggling on Tuesday. The team was mostly working on end zone drills and unlikely late-game situations.
Tannehill threw two touchdowns (Mike Wallace, Michael Egnew) and two interceptions (Reshad Jones, Cam Wake). The Jones interception came on a long pass intended for Wallace in what was nearly a Hail Mary throw. The Wake interception came after Philip Wheeler tipped a Tannehill pass.

Williams could be a challenge, and Landry on punts.

Thigpen made plays as a receiver last year... We should keep him at least for one more year in this new offense.

James Walker's observations:

The offense had a bounce-back performance after a shaky outing on Tuesday. There were more explosive plays and less sloppiness. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw a pair of nice touchdowns, to receiver Mike Wallace and tight end Michael Egnew, and backup quarterback Matt Moore connected on a deep throw to receiver Brian Hartline. Overall, it was about even between the offense and defense. Tannehill also threw two interceptions, to safety Reshad Jones and defensive end Cameron Wake. Neither side was dominant.

Many want to get rid of players, with no clue as to who is a better option to replace them.

I don't think I would say he made plays last year. He was pretty good on returns in 2012, but last year he did close to nothing. If he isn't clearly better than the other return options cut him and move on.

he made 2 plays as a WR thats all i can remember. the New England game winner. and the long catch vs New Orleans where he got caught from behind btw. he was average as a returner. I wouldn't pound my fist so we could keep the guy. too much competition at WR. Thigpen is gone

i think thigpens chance at staying is getting slim, with the receivers group being crowded with wallace, hartline, gibson, mathews, landry, and hazel he has a bad chance in getting a spot. Same goes with RB with Miller, Moreno, Thomas, and Gillislee. I think they make the most out of landry and make him the returner on kicks and punts. Kick returns are almost extinct and Punt returns needs for sure hands which landry is gonna be known for. Landry becomes returner and the others get cut and Wooten to practice squad.

Thigpen cant be used like the broncos used hillman? Quick scat back in the flats and taking screens once and a while? No clue why we have him as a receiver when we just went out and got like 8 receivers for camp.

Thigpen can't pass protect or run between the tackles, thus dismissing his value as a back. He can catch the ball out of the back and occasionally run a sweep or draw. He doesn't do enough to warrant a roster running back spot.

How does RT throw an interception like that to Phillip Wheeler and wake.

More on Thigpen-Williams battle for return job:

He dropped off to 18th in kick returns and 19th in punt returns in 2013. Although he said he goes into every training camp like his roster spot is on the line, he doesn’t seem too concerned about losing the return job.

“I definitely got it,” Thigpen said. “I’ve just got to keep working hard, keep showing what I got and stay healthy — that’s the most important thing.”

Are you asking how could Tannehill throw a pass that Wheeler tipped and Wake intercepted? Not seeing video it's hard to say if it was a bad pass or a good defensive play, but tipped passes getting intercepted are not rare.
