Practice squads expected to expand to 10 players

brilliant idea!!'
I have had these on my mind for a while now even with 8 ps guys. Teams should have the right time tag players just like they do with the franchise tags.
You and everyone else. 2 years ago on moving the chains Pat Kirwan said it would happen.

They should just add another 10 spots to the roster and do away with the practice squad. It is what they are headed toward anyways.

It wouldn't be fair to the player. Why should someone like Fede be able to be tagged by the Dolphins at practice squad pay, which is a lot less then the NFL minimum, when another team wants to offer him a contract paying five times more and wants to put him on its roster.

Good point.

Why couldn't they expand the roster from 53 to 55? Give a couple of other guys on the bubble a chance?
I'd expect that most teams would welcome it.

I agree that active rosters should be expanded by a couple of players. But, aside from that, I don't think teams should be able to sign a player off another team's practice squad without that team having a chance to match, so-to-speak.

For example, if the Patriots decided to sign one of our PS players, the Dolphins should have a brief window of time to decide whether they are willing to lose that player or match the Patriots contract offer and add the player to their active roster.

I don't like the idea of players practicing and learning your system then being signed away with no option to retain that player. I do like the idea of developing players and, once they become valuable to other teams, having the option to keep them yourself if you can free up the roster spot. The player wouldn't be negatively affected by the change at all because they are getting a contact and being added to an active roster regardless which team it is. And, lastly, the team that first invested in the player's development would have control over whether they lose what has now become a coveted asset.

I support the Practice Squad concept, making it possible for weaker teams to poach talent from stronger teams. One of the really great things about the NFL is the ability of the bottom team to turn things around quickly via the Draft and free agency and make the playoffs the following season. The ability to recruit inexperienced talent from the Practice Squad is one of the mechanisms that assists in evening the competition. Eg we picked up Mike Thomas from the 49ers Practice Squad and gave him a chance to make it. The reality is that San Francisco had stashed Thomas away for 2 years - to Jim Harbaugh he was good depth. However, the player deserved an opportunity and Miami came calling.
I also follow Autralian Rugby League and in the NRL there are few mechanisms to assist evening the competition like the NFL. Net effect is that the weak teams tend to stay weak and the strong teams don't give a damn. Some concepts like assisting in evening the competition are needed for the good of the game and the NFL owners and management understand that.

I'd have rather they added 2 more to the active roster.

It'd accomplish the same depth advantage for teams without opening up 2 more guys with knowledge of our schemes to be poached by rivals before we play them.
