I know it is NOT spelled with a "Z" ;-)
FOr me: the score was Miami 10 - Jax 0. Jacksonville's first team against our first team was dominated and ineffective. Yes, there were dropped balls on Jax's part, but there was also pressure by our front 7. Did you see Zach all up in Lefto's (spelling??) face that caused him to force the ball on several occassions?
THe only way Jax could score was by us removing one starter after another, or Harrington fumbling. Bascially, the kept their first string in and scored after our main guys were out (Will Allen aside). Sad...and then they thought they were doing something.
AND THIS IS JUST A PRESEASON GAME.
SO having said all of this, I was very pleased with the efforts of the so deemed starters in this preseason game. THe Maimi Herald was all doom and gloom this morning. THe only thing they wrote that made sense was that our secondary was suspect, but that is something we knew before entering the game, I believe.
For me, to see Miami compete so well up front, to see us move the ball so well, and see Daunte play AT ALL, was a great way to start the season.
It looked as though our starters were ahead of their starters.
But then we had the Battle of the Subs for the rest of the game.
I will tell you this. My first look at Cleo Lemon did not leave me grumbling. I like his poise and easy throwing style. He can zip the ball and make it look effortless.
I knew after the first quarter, the game was meaningless, and it was meaningless in the first quarter as well. Except that I see a lot of Nick Saban preparedness in our first string guys.
FOr subs, I liked CLeo Lemon, Cliff Russell and Frederick Evans stood out on certain series of plays.
When the pass rush started to fail I noticed we were burned for long passes, exposing the new secondary for what it is, new and well, not great. The pass rush (except for Evans) was lazy with the subs....I saw one play where a player had a straight shot on Jax QB Goddard (???) and kind of quit. Then turned on the after burners when he realized he was through the line unhindered. Sad. THat play could have shut down a TD drive (The TD would come later as this play landed a first down).
Had he continued on full bore (alal Zach) it sould have made a difference in the whole game (again if it were a real & meaningful game). But that is what we are looking for. Players that will play when it does count.
Hopefully these are early signs of things to come.
I just knew this would get lost by the media because they probably don't understand preseaon or are just against the fins (see Salguero's article in the hearald) http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/football/.
To sum it up! I was excited to see what our first string units did. Enoy the game for what it was.
