Preseason: Tannehill vs. Beck/Henne/White

Just be careful, Beck had several pre-season games with QB ratings>100...

I don't ever recall Beck making any of those throws RT made. Beck was ****

Yeah, he did. But he never looked like he belonged. And unfortunately for him, the offensive system was not all that QB friendly, once the bullets really started flying. I think the WCO and the up-tempo strategy will allow RT to thrive quickly. The WCO will make excellent use of both his intellect and his physical abilities. I don't know at this point if RT will be an intellectual match for the likes of Brady or Manning, but to this point it seems he could be. He also looks like he's got great leadership skills. Half of being a great leader in football is having the respect and faith of your team mates. From what I've heard from players in camp and what I've seen on the field, it seems he already has that part nailed.

Stats are meaningless, but preseason stats take it to a whole nother level of meaningless. All you need to look at is how he played - good on the run, great command of the huddle, good grasp of the offense, nice throws with anticipation, etc. In my opinion, he looked much more comfortable than a rookie quarterback should, and that's promising.

Because almost every throw he made was a check down. He was a timid POS. He had no QB skills. He didnt know where to move, had no poise, didnt take any shots, did not have the accuracy to throw them being the main reason he didnt, and basically looked lost out there while completing a few passes and getting those rating points the Beck fluffers loved to throw out there. He also took a bunch of sacks and fumbled every other play. Other than that he was great.

Tannehill on the other hand looked like he belonged out there. He moved where he was supposed to, fired strikes, challenged the defense, looked poised and in control, basically like an NFL QB. Thats the difference.

Thats the difference between true first round talent at the QB position like Matt Ryan and Ryan Tannehill, and a physically challenged 2nd round money bargain like Beck and Henne.

Tannehill did what he had to do against the 2nd and 3rd stringers. He looked poised and in command of the offense. He also looked like he was having a lot of fun out there. Every snap for him is a learning experience, and when he gets pitted against 1st stringers he will most likely rise to the occasion.

"but but but it wasn't against the 1s!!!" yeah? would you rather him have looked like **** against the 2nd and 3rd team players? get out of here with that ****.

In regards to the starters vs. backups conversation ...... It's easy to look good when your WR's are running free and the coverage is as soft as tissue paper. But there are still positives to take from it, in terms of Tanny's ball locations and quick decision making.

I personally need to see if he keeps that up vs. starting level competition because the complexion of the coverage changes drastically, especially when teams roll out their disguises in the regular season. When DB's are in the hip pockets of our WR's, can he consistently put the ball in tight spots? When he has legit pass rush on him (not this preseason vanilla gameplan stuff) will he be able to stick the throws still?

In time we are going to find this out. He's clearly ahead of the curve from where a lot of rookie QB's usually are. Luckily for him he's not out there having to diagnose the defense, the speed of the game, along with his playbook ..... he's known the playbook for 4 years.

I said it last night in vip chat... he's earned some time with the 1s. Moore had last night, give tannehill the next game, and then decide on your starter for game 3 and the season.

Tannehill played well but got lucky on a few plays. He looked good against 2s and 3s as you would expect of someone in competition to start. The only pass I didn't like was on 4th down to Clay that would be a pick-six against any starting defense, especially agianst a Revis. But a good game overall.

The thing is they both need snaps vs. starters still. This is Moore's first time playing under this Sherman offense so he too has to be allowed a "learning curve". I say you take this thing all the way through the third preseason game for an ample look.

so we're in agreement. tannehill needs time with the 1s. he's earned it. moore had over a quarter with the 1s last night. tannehill deserves an equal oppurtunity next game.

Guys, leave the religious **** for the religion forum. Who cares if Beck was Mormon? Even if he were a Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster member, he still was a ****ty QB.

Next "He's a Mormon, ZOMG" post is going to get an infraction. It does nothing but cheapen the argument and create flame wars.

Tanne's play action is a thing of beauty... And it Makes a difference when your QB really works to sell every fake.

He made a ton of throws that those other guys are simply not capable of... The one to the sideline over the defender but with velocity. Hey Henne, it's called 'touch'...

Original post:
I know it's only been one preseason game, but Tannehill has already shown more than Beck, Henne, and White ever did during any of their rookie preseason games.

1st preseason game:
Beck: 71.3 passer rating, 0 passing TD/0 INT, 60 completion % (3/5), 4.6 YPA (23/5), no rushing attempts, 1 sack, 1 fumble (recovered)
Henne: 71.7 passer rating, 0 passing TD/0 INT, 50 completion % (5/10), 6.7 YPA (67/10), 3 YPC (3/1), 1 sack, 0 fumbles
White: 0 passer rating, 0 passing TD/1 INT, 28.6 completion % (2/7), 2 YPA (14/7), 3.3 YPC (20/6), 0 sacks, 0 fumbles
Tannehill: 106.6 passer rating, 1 passing TD/0 INT, 66.7 completion % (14/21), 7.95 YPA (167/21), 5 YPC (5/1), 0 sacks, 0 fumbles

Top (rookie) preseason performances:
Beck ( 2nd preseason game): 102.8 passer rating, 0 passing touchdowns/0 INT, 83.3 completion % (5/6), 8.67 YPA (52/6), 4 YPC (4/1), 3 sacks, 0 fumbles
Beck (3rd preseason game): 104.7 passer rating, 2 passing touchdowns/0 INT, 50 completion % (11/22), 7.36 YPA (162/22), 0 rushes, 2 sacks, 1 fumble (recovered)
*Beck (2nd and 3rd games combined): 105.4 passer rating, 2 passing touchdowns/0 INT, 57.1 completion % (16/28), 7.64 YPA (214/28), 4 YPC (4/1), 5 sacks, 1 fumble (recovered)

Henne (4th preseason game): 91 passer rating, 1 passing touchdown/1 INT, 80 completion % (16/20), 6.85 YPA (137/20), .5 YPC (2/1), 3 sacks, 0 fumbles
Tannehilll (1st preseason game): 106.6 passer rating, 1 passing TD/0 INT, 66.7 completion % (14/21), 7.95 YPA (167/21), 5 YPC (5/1), 0 sacks, 0 fumbles

Total rookie preseason stats:
Beck: 71.5 passer rating, 2 passing touchdowns/2 INT, 56.3 completion % (27/48), 6.25 YPA (300/48), 4 YPC (8/2), 10 sacks, 2 fumbles (both recovered)
Henne: 70.3 passer rating, 1 passing touchdown/2 INT, 63.5 completion % (40/63), 5.57 YPA (351/63), .75 YPC (3/4), 4 sacks, 1 fumble (lost)
White: 19.8 passer rating, 0 passing touchdowns/1 INT, 37.5 completion % (6/16), 1.94 YPA (31/16), 3.45 YPC (38/11), 0 sacks, 0 fumbles

Observations:
It was clear from the very beginning that Pat White wasn't an NFL QB. White was a poor man's Tim Tebow, and we all know how Tebow turned out.

The red flags (sacks & fumbles) that were there in the preseason didn't go away for Beck in the regular season. Beck was a little worse in the regular season than he was in the preseason. The inverse was true for Henne.

Beck had 2 preseason games where his passer rating was north of 100. He had 22 passing attempts in one of those games and 6 passing attempts in the other. During which time he fumbled once and was sacked 5 times. Despite a couple of games with nice passing numbers, it all evened out by the end of his first preseason.

Let's not hold RT's jock, but comparing him to Beck, Henne, and white is ridiculous.
He is not anything like those 3.
He has a much higher ceiling.

How is it ridiculous? There was a time not too long ago when many Dolphins fans were high on Beck and Henne. Tannehill looks good now, but his career path may go any number of directions.

Like I said until Andrew Luck put on his clinic, Ryan Tannehill had the top passer rating amongst all NFL quarterbacks in preseason. And he didn't get it cheap by having some easy screen pass pop off for 80+ yards. I'm not saying Andrew Luck got it cheap because that happened to him, I thought Luck earned it as he kept playing, but there are other guys (Robert Griffin for instance) who did indeed collect touchdowns or big plays because of easy screens where the skill player did all the heavy lifting.

Even when Henne or Beck had a good preseason game I've never seen them look that good. For that matter, as I said in another thread, I'm not sure I've seen RYAN TANNEHILL look as good as Ryan Tannehill did Friday night.

Hold your horses skippy..I like RT, but lets remember that he was playing against 2-3 team players. He did great, but he needs to play that way against the 1-2's. Hopefully coach P will get him in the game in the first quarter this week.

Henne/Beck/White didn't play against first-stringers either and yet stunk it up for the biggest part. Tannehill is doing what you'd want to see. play well against the competition he's facing, unlike QB's of the past. he can't do much more at this point.
