The NFL is projected to raise its salary cap to about $130 million, up about 5 percent from $123 million last year, league sources said Thursday.

The $130 million figure is even higher than teams are expecting or had been preparing for and will be welcome news for teams, especially ones like the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints that are cap-strapped.

Cowboys executive Stephen Jones has said that he wouldn't make any decisions about players' futures "til it's time to get under the cap."

NFL teams do not need to be compliant with the salary cap until March 11, but some teams have already started cutting players to create cap savings, like the Detroit Lions did last week in cutting Louis Delmas and Nate Burleson and the Saints with Will Smith, Roman Harper and Jabari Greer.

Good news and bad news. Good news cause we now have even more cap space to negotiate with our own free agents but the bad news is so does every other team so players that may have been on the market for us may no longer be.

Oops, posted this in the wrong forum. Mods can you move this to the forum that talks about football? Thanks. Don't know where that forum is any more.

This was the year we expected it to increase because of the TV contracts, and a $7 million increase is very nice. I anticipate lots of signings now that the NFL has released this information.

7 million extra should about cover Grimes...

I am interested to see what other teams do now....mostly KC and Cincy since they have players I would like on the Phins...

This makes Ireland's cap management look so much worse, we had like the 5th highest amount of cap space going into last season and we were the only team with more than $20 million in cap space that didn't just hire a new coach/GM. I had been preaching it all last season that we could have easily spent another $10 million on Long or Fasano+Bush and been fine and I was right. The teams that were over-committed like the Saints and Cowboys will get a big break and what might have been a difficult decision for the Saints regarding Graham just got real easy.

So this helps the teams that were extremely aggressive with their cap management (Seattle Seahawks anyone?) and probably hurts the teams like us that felt it would be better to collect interest rather than get another player that might have gotten us over the hump.

I think this is up around $3M from the earlier projection. It's no a whole lot but, does make a difference. I'm very curious as to how the future caps are going to be affected by the new TV revenue, as the NFLPA borrowed money from this year (from what I've read) to stabilize last year's cap.

There was speculation that the cap would rise gradually at $5M a year, as well as a big jump next year of $10-15M. It could change things a lot.

The DirecTV Sunday Ticket contract is up next year I believe....and that is a huge revenue stream for the NFL. There were rumors DirecTV would no longer have exclusive access to out of market NFL games. The cap increases proportionally to the NFL's revenue.

Those greedy sons of bitches should leave the cap about where it is now and focus on lowering the costs for the average fan. This cycle we're in now where the players demand more of the profits - owners give it to them only to raise prices to get their profits back - which results in the players demanding a bigger piece of the profits needs to stop somewhere.

It's free to watch on TV...

Lowering the costs? lol.

When we're one of the few teams with some money, we can make a good offseason acquisition or three. But, when everyone has money there are fewer good acquisitions available and they will have all of their prices bid upward, so they tend to be worse financially in the long run. While I'm glad the league is healthy and making good money ... it's actually a bad thing for the Dolphins relatively. Now the price for Grimes, Soliai, Starks, Carroll, Clemons, Patterson, etc. will go up. But also it means that the Ravens may get to keep Monroe, the Raiders will certainly keep Veldheer and the Bengals will probably be able to keep Collins. So if we're going to get any of those guys or Albert, we'll need to pay over the odds ... think more money than Jake Long got.

Oh well, at least we still have a shot to trade up for Taylor Lewan.

This year's TV revenue took a 40% jump from $5 to $7 Billion. The union borrowed by trading off future benefits to make the last 2 year's caps livable, and need to put that back in place. I could see next yea's cap jumping by $20M but no one knows or isn't saying that for sure. I haven't seen anything current on this.

More money for each team means higher demands from the players. Grimes $7 mill per year just went to $9 mil.

This is why it's REALLY important to start hitting on some draft picks. All teams have to spend 90% of their cap, and FA's are going to diminish greatly. A few million this year is not a very big deal but, wait until 2015.

IMO, this would be a good time to lock up young guys to extensions. Hickey has his work cut out for him.

Just because there's more money available doesn't increase a players value. If he wants $9 mil a year then he can walk. We can sign two veterans for that price and improve our depth.

The greater concern for me is how many O-lineman, that fit the scheme, are now going to be available. As someone mentioned Collins, Monroe and Veldheer may not be available, not to mention Beedles, Asamoah and Schwartz. Not sure how we can replace at least 4 O-lineman without some free agency and this made it much tougher. The extra money could allow us to re-sign Starks though so maybe we won't have to focus on drafting a DT for his replacement.
