I would like to propose a change to the avatar policy that prohibits swim suit pictures in avatars.

The staff faces this issue nearly every day and having to make judgment calls over what I believe to be a policy in need of change. We have members who have bathing suit pictures and when we ask them to change their avatars, they point at avatars like the one below. You can imagine how difficult it is for staff to fight that fight all the time.

The reason behind the prohibition was to prevent off-topic discussion but, in reality, if someone is distracted by a picture of a bathing suit clad woman, it is not the fault of the avatar but of the poster's short attention span and immaturity.

I believe that the reason why it is so hard to set a boundary is because we are seeking to prohibit something that anyone who has visited a public pool or the beach has seen.

Rather than make artificial barrier and prohibit some decent material but preclude others, why not just prohibit lewd, nude or overly suggestive avatars?

Since you folks are our board of directors, you have a say in any policy changes. With that in mind, I'd like to open the floor for discussion and a vote in a week's time.

I have no problem with that, but your need to make it clear what and what will not be allowed.

This I have no problem with

This could be considered lewd to some (I think its kind of funny)

I guess some could consider mine lewd???

There will always be somebody that will point at someone elses avatar no mater what you do.

I guess if there is a question or a grey area, you could always post it here and have everyone judge on it for a ruling?

I see Walt's point..We do have to develop a language to leave little room for interpretation

That's a great idea !

Do you? I mean, isn't that the kind of overkill you're looking to avoid? Just say that the moderators' decision will be final and leave it at that. That said, using premies as a "focus group" for such avatars is a great idea, as that will give you a good sample that can give you confidence that you're making a resonable ruling.

For instance, I think MW's first example would violate the TOS, but damn, would I ever like to meet her.

Good point, brother.

I'm a proponent of this; let the call be a judgment call, with one appeal to an Admin permitted.

think there needs to be no leeway, avatars should be g rated, no pictures of women in revealing clothes, be they cheerleaders or not. As much as I like Walt's pictures they should not be used as an avatar, as we do have kids under 18 here. Kids get overexposed to crap everyday which they do not need to be seeing and it would be nice to have this be a solid forum discussing football, and not showing T&A. They can get that on sexvideos.com if there parents haven't locked down their computer yet. I used to haev some lovely pictures up as an avatar until my kids saw it and wondered what it was. I took them down straight away. If people want to see the stuff go to the ladies lounge, that way they are making a conscious decision and not being exposed accidentally.

Man how opinions change now I am a dad. I used to sell porno mags to all the kids at the boarding school I went to back in England, would nick or buy them from the newsagent in the village and make a fortune back at the college lol.

I haven't voted yet, because I'm just not sure yet. I tend to lean towards Paul's post... man I hate sitting on the fence.

As a family man with young daughters who are hovering around me all of the time I understand where you are coming from.I already get funny looks from them or my wife when a questionable avatar of a scantily clad women goes by.

Personally I wish the policy would be tightened to show only sports personalities or family members.I guess official pictures of Dolphin cheerleaders would be ok......not like the one shown above.

This is a family oriented MB .IMO it would be a mistake to change that orientation

You only have to visit a few other MBs were vulgarity is rampant to appreciate what we have here.I think thats one of the reasons this MB has grown so big.Its family orientation.

However if a decision is made to relax the rules then I suggest that the criteria should be if that avatar causes any distraction or off topic conversation then we should ask the member to change it for that reason.

I understand that I may be prejudiced because of my particular situation.I would probably feel different if I was single.

Same position here too. My two boys come in and they look at the computer and see the Dolphin stuff and their eyes are on the screen right away. So nice looking ladies bouncing around and looking all special doesn't go well on my end. Besides we have another spot to go look at those anyways. It's bad enough explaining some thing to my kids already. Like on Superbowl Sunday. My oldest(10) and I are watching ESPN and their talking about the game and things. Then they go to a commercial and guess what it is.... Viagra commercial and when the time is right for those special moments, you have to rush it because you have 36hrs to use it LOL! Next thing you know I get this... Dad what is a 4 hour erection and what is the right time to use it! :sidelol:  :boohoo:

I think we should treat every avatar as if a young child is looking over our shoulder and can see it. It may not be the popular choice but I think we say time and time again how this is a family channel. Lets keep risque in the LL and even there...well I won't go there.

I think you misunderstood the questions Rev.If you are against the liberalization of the avatars vote choice No 2 or No 3.
