What We learned…

For those of you expecting last night to be a cake walk due to the lack of Big Ben, I hope now you are able to see that we are yet a First Tier NFL team like the Steelers…but we are on our way.

Since last year, I have witnessed a greater physicality to the Dolphins, something lacking since the Don Shula era. Jimmy Johnson, the mastermind talent architect that he was for the Cowboys and Dolphins, built his team in Miami based on Defensive speed. Finesse. “Finesseive Defense†I liked to call it.
Wanny did nothing more than try to keep the Dolphins afloat between filming porn movies in his short tenure as the Dolphins ran in place on a treadmill of mediocrity.

Enter Nick Saban…
For a while there last night; we matched the tough physical style play of the Steelers punch for punch until the 4th quarter, where we were finally worn down by the Steelers superior rock solid offensive and defensive lines.

The trenches are where the Steelers and most Championships are won, and it is the trenches where Saban will ultimately build a champion in the Dolphins.

It is not rocket science to dissect the game last night. Without Big Ben we all felt we could sneak in to Pittsburgh with a win. But the two most vital elements to the Steelers Football philosophy were not absent last night, the starting offensive and defensive line from last years Superbowl run.

This is Steelers football, to punch their opponent’s offensive and defensive lines in the nose.

In the early quarters, The Steelers were committed to the run and Fast Willie was able to sustain 2-4 yards per carry compared to the Dolphins feeble 1-2 yards per carry. This is because our B+ defensive line was outplayed by an A+ Offensive line, and our B+ Offensive line was outplayed by a A+ Defensive line.

By the 4th quarter, their lines on both sides of the ball were wearing out ours, and Fast Willie suddenly starts running for 4-7 yards per carry, often times one tackle away from taking it to the house. Saban made the decision before halftime(or perhaps before the game) to concede our offensive rushing game and try to win in the air because he knew the Steelers defensive lines play would be superior to our offensive lines play.

We have an excellent pass rush, but it was non existent last night because of the Steelers offensive line is arguably the best in the league. Remember last year we were second in the league in total sacks, a stat that we will once again be a NFL leader in 2006. A true testament to the Steelers offensive line last night, you must give them props, they kept Dolphins rushers out of Batch’s’ kitchen all night.

Personally I think the season is getting ready to be a lot of fun for us Dolphin fans.
We will most likely be 5-2 or 6-1 at our bye week break. Our only other loss in the next 6 games will be at New England, we will dominate everyone else between now and the bye week
Stop and think about our last 4 out of 5 weeks, we have been going up against the best front 7 defensive fronts in the league(Jacksonville, Tampa, Carolina, Pittsburgh)
These 4 practice games and 1 real game against elite teams will make our offensive and defensive line learn to play tougher and more physical. This is what Saban wants, the inner core of our offensive and defensive lines to be the strength of the team. It will take time, we are still a handful of players away from joining the upper echelon of the NFL.

Be patient everyone, we should win 10-11 games this year, a trip to the playoffs and perhaps a victory in the postseason to boot. The good news is we will be better than last year, more physical, I saw many signs last night that told me so. Sabans work is incomplete, the good news is he knows it and will not let up until we win the Superbowl.

I feel sorry for Buffalo next week, it will not be a pretty day to be a Bills fan.

i agree with your take. the battle is won and lost in the trenches, and the steelers have arguably the best line in the nfl on both side, certainly top 5 both sides of the ball. we can and will make improvements in the offensive line play. they really handled our blitz packages well and our d-line, this is a humbling expirience for a proud and confident front seven. i think we will really improve thru the first 4-5 games and have a very tough team to face after that.

Great post, I totally agree. I am really looking forward to the rest of the season, it takes more then a loss to get me down. Great to see that there is another positive Fin fan besides me, it has been very negative on here lately.

We are here battling also. We have shut them up in alot of threads. Heck even the Buffalo fans is helping in some threads.:dolphins: The beauty of fans like us is we have our hearts in it and these pessimist just are lacking in that department and because of that they can never hold us back. 15-1:dolphins:

Awesome! 1 game doesn't make a season. And even with the lost last night we hung in there for 3 1/2 quarters against the defending champs. Yea we still got some tweaking to be done. But overall I was it was solid effort.

You have to take account the scenario opening night, national televised game, and all the ceremonial hoopla infavor of the steelers. I even heard somewhere it was the supposedly the broncos that was scheduled for this game and they complained so that they can be taken out of this schedule. So that just tells you nobody wanted to play the steelers and be the "punching bag". But like I said we put up a good (not great) effort. This game would be the barometer for the whole season. We can only get better.
And for the bandwagon fans, good riddance it was nice knowing ya, and dont come back later for another ride.

Great post i love you positive attitude! You are right it is going to be a fun season for the finfans this year! We played tough and had a good shot at beating them but they wore us down and got us in the 4th. oh well sh*t happens! The positive thing is we played tough hung in there and very physical against a very physical well coached team. I guarantee you we had Coher swetting last night. We are going to take it to buffalo next week!

Thanks for the positive feedback, I went to the Dolphins/Steelers preseason game last year, we had 50 yard line seats 10 rows behind the Phins bench. Although it was a preseason game, and a year ago, there were moments where it was so loud in the stadium, it far exceeded the crowds of 100K fans I have witnessed at Tiger stadium at LSU. I knew we had our work cut out for us. My good seats also gave me a pretty good idea real close up just how physical the Steelers offensive and defensive lines were. Our stiff competition this fall has only made our offensive and defensive line work extra hard so when it comes time for the easier games, BuF, Ten, @Hou...we will be well prepared to wipe the field with them.

I know it is 5 days removed from the Saban red Flag incident, but the damn league and media keep harping away at, so for theraputic reasons, I am puring my opinion about the matter

The Saban Red flag incident is 99.9% NFLs problem to correct, not Sabans.
League rules clearly dictate that the NFL coach must throw the flag before the ball is snapped. Black and white rule, no gray in the interpretation.

Nick did so.

A NFL record 19.3 million tuned into NBC to watch the opener, and we all saw Saban throw the flag before the ball was snapped. You mean to tell me not one of the dozen or so league officials in the booth upstairs did not see the flag thrown? Why did they not intervene? The rules do not tell the coach he should throw the red flag with eagerness and Exaggerated enthusiasm, it says he should throw the flag before the ball is snapped, in which he did.
The good news is both the NFL and head coaches will learn from the mistake and I hope will be able to avoid such blantant errors in the future. Saban followed the rules as insribed by league officials. But it is not Sabans fault the league refused to take accountability for the mistake. Again, the rules do not dictate how the flag should be thrown, but only that it should be thrown before the snap, and Saban did what he was instructed.

OK I feel better, thank you finheaven for giving me a place to vent.

Nice posts with the game and your insight on how the season will turn out....hoping you are right :D

You are right...I believe it wasn't Saban's fault...its only his fault if the rules were meant for him to look like a freakin nut throwin his red flag at every ref in the game for a challenge.
