I read some people was asking for news about our new punter:

Besides Beck and the WRs, the other young players had less of a chance to stand out. In the morning session, punter Brandon Fields had a chance to show off the leg that helped him lead the nation in punting in 2004 at Michigan State (47.9 yards per punt).

Fields nailed one punt more than 60 yards on the fly with tremendous hang time. Even when he doesn’t make great contact, Fields punts with ball with impressive distance.

It looks like he might be a great special teams weapon for us.

I'd say I'm extremely pleased what they've done overall with the special teams in the offseason. Fields and Ginn could put us near the top of the NFL as far as punting and defending punts. I am, however, a little concerned about our kicker. No one is talking about him, and I can't tell if that's a good thing or not.

I just hope Feely doesn't let us down at some point this season. Our division, and the playoffs, could be decided by a field goal.

Fields's problem will stem from trying to get kicks inside the 20 yard line. He has had the leg to boom it for seemingly ever. But placing the ball precisely where he needs it to be will be the task for him.

That's one decision I really disagreed with Cam and Randy on. We traded a fine punter for a pick that we used to pick up a rookie. This seems like a bit of a risk for a relatively small dollar amount. I would have much preferred that we kept Donnie.

I just hope he can boom them high and accurately to give our coverage team plenty of time to stop any returns. If he can do Reggie Roby skyscrapers that are only retrievable via fair catch, he'll be a great addition.

i honestly dont want fields on the field at all...having a probowl punter means your offense isnt scoring a whole lot so keep fields off the field!!

I agree.

Exactly, we should be in the top tier of special teams units this season, and we haven't had a great punter since Reggie Roby.

Didn't Donnie Jones lead the league in NET punt average in 2005? That's pretty good in my estimation. Of course, that isn't all Donnie, that is help from the coverage teams, but it's a noteworthy achievement about his length and hang time.

That's nice to hear about Fields. Jones had a down year last year, without much change in our ST's coverage units. Fields needs to concentrate on his NET average--as that is the most important stat in my mind, and work on pinning the opponents inside the 20.

A difference in philosophy, some coaches don't mind shorter kicks with longer hang times to allow coverage to get down field, other coaches like long and deep kicks and relying on blazing fast coverage teams.

Who is are "gunner" going to be this year, Worrel?

Philosophy makes no difference. If you lead the NFL in Net average per punt, then you're doing your job as a punter. I'm not saying Donnie Jones was as great as Roby, but he was a good punter.

I don't know how it's going to be this year. Hang time is important than just booming kicks though. You can't outkick your coverage. I don't know who our gunners will be...weren't they Lehan and Eddy Jackson last year?
