PUP vs IR

Can someone please explain to me why guys like McKinney & Poole are possibly going to be on the IR as opposed to the PUP list where they could be cleared to play after the 10th game?

Players can only be put on the PUP at the start of training camp. If players are put on the PUP at the start of training camp, they can come off of the PUP at anytime during training camp. Once the season starts, they are ineligible to come off until week 10. If players are on the active roster at the start of training camp, they are ineligible for the PUP.

i still dont understand why anyone would think mckinney will be back after spinal fusion, he only has less then a ten percent chance of ever playing again with a spinal injury at the position of interior line

I don't beleive that is true... if they are placed on PUP prioir to training camp they can be activated at any time during training camp with no consequenses. I beleive players can be placed on PUP for the regular season, up to the first mandatory cutdowns.

The problem is that if it is not very likely that the player will return than you are will have to sign another player to replace them, and if the player CAN return you have to make a very difficult cut decision mid-season.

If a player plays even one snap in training camp, in an organized drill (not meetings), the player is then ineligible for the PUP list, preseason or regular season.

I think once upon a time you were correct. I remember it that way in the past as well. But today, you practice once and that's it. Roster or IR no third option.

Fins & Poole couldn't come to an injury settlement, so only way Fins could be sure to hang on to him was put him on the IR. Not sure about McKinney.
