Putting the Tannehill deep ball issue to bed once and for all.

I've always liked the air yards vs yac stats, tannehill has always done well iin it. I just don't know how if at all it applies to anything. To many factors to really use it in any meaningful way.

He looked to be on the money so far this year. I still wouldn't put him in the top 10 but he is a "Solid Starter" level QB.

fair enough

You can use those to evaluate route depth/frequency in an offense system... Air yards actually include less factors as it takes YAC out of the equation.

Didn't look at article but my eyes tell me he's throwing a nice deep ball now and it has been improving every year.

I doubt that. If Tom Brady had Julio Jones I bet he would throw it downfield a ton more. If Ryan tannehill was constantly playng with a point lead I bet he would throw it downfield less. If Dalton didn't have AJ Green I bet he would rarely throw it downfield

I've never understood the idea that some systems don't throw it downfield. If you have the talent to do it, you will.

last year he was very good in the deep ball dept. He has other issues but the deep ball is not one of them, that problem left with mike wallace

Yes but Tom Brady doesnt have Julio Jones, Ryan Tannehill rarely plays with a lead and Dalton does have AJ Green.... Stats are a reflection of reality, they are not effective in fantasy land scenarios though...

I think one issue Tannehill has had (and Henne had too coincidently) is that the deep ball does not need to be a traditionally well thrown ball, it's about "touch". You even see QBs like Tyrod Taylor & Tebow throw it well (not particularly good pocket passers) and I would argue the reason is, the higher arc of the ball or the "softer" the ball is thrown, the easier it is for a WR to catch. The only requirement for a successful deep ball is that it's further than the DB and in reach of the WR, timing doesn't really matter per se, just the ability for them to track the ball. Check the difference between this:

and this:

Both Tannehill, but one he didn't think and threw it on the run vs. one he did and tried to deliver a strike. You can see the arc of the ball going off screen on the first and not on the second. I'm not absolving Stills on the drop, he absolutely should have caught it, but it's just reality that a ball moving slower is easy to track. Here's a good example of a ball with a high arc that Tanne threw but just placed wrong, if Tanne throws and to the left so Wallace doesn't have to adjust that may have been a TD.

I do think his accuracy on deep balls is at a pretty high level among NFL QBs at this point, just would like him to adjust the velocity depending on the type of throw. Similar issue with fade routes in the redzone. Another thing is, people have said (incorrectly), QBs can't get better at deep balls, he obviously has. Seems like Al Saunders helped last year, I remember reading he coached him to throw it earlier in the play(which to me means higher and softer).

And to be clear, in all of those throws, it is laughably clear that other teams WRs seem to catch those throws, it's just the Dolphins where that is not good enough. All of Aaron Rodgers deep balls look like lasers, so I'm not saying it's a requirement, but...for whatever reason ours can't.

What does that chart have to do with the deep ball?

The air yards just provides a metric to those who say Tannehill gets most of his yards from YAC, which is a common criticism. It's fairly obvious that he's in the middle of the pack in regards to yards WRs are gaining vs. yards the QB actually threw for, with many notables being lower like Brees, Brady, Rodgers.

I'd still like to see a return of those 35-45 yard 3-wood deep balls that Tannehill used so effectively last season.

Maybe tomorrow. Seemingly we'll have control of matters for significant stretches of the game and can aggressively apply the playbook.

Last season? How about last week.

I get that you're simply a box score guy (where this is declared a 24 yard TD completion) who does not understand the significance of tape, but that pass is clearly a 40 yard throw.
