Cornerback Sean Smith took some time from his draft-day celebration party to talk to South Florida reporters via conference call. Here's what Smith had to say about being selected by the Dolphins and his potential role in the Miami defense.

On where the Dolphins worked him and if he feels he can play both corner and safety: “As of right now it doesn’t matter. I am excited to get down to mini-camp and prove why I deserve to be one of the top picks for the Dolphins.”

On if he was disappointed that he didn’t get drafted earlier: “This is a happy experience to be drafted. This is something I wanted to do since I was a child. It is an honor to be part of the Dolphins organization.”

If it fires him up that people say he is too big to play corner: “It definitely does. The coaching staff was definitely excited about what I could bring to the organization. I am just ready to get down and work.”

On what he brings to the organization: “Excitement. I am a very versatile athlete who can make plays on the defensive side of the ball. I am just ready to get down there and prove it to the world.”

On the advantages that his height and size bring: “It definitely makes it more difficult for receivers to catch the ball and ball placement for quarterbacks. With my reach and size, you definitely have to keep the ball away from me. With that in my mind, my size helps me out a lot."

On if his experience as a receiver helps him: “Definitely. I understand splits and route combinations. I understand the open holes inside defenses where people like to fit inside zone coverages. Being a former receiver helps me out a lot.”

(On what type of coverages he played at Utah: “We were primarily a press man team, but we played a lot of thirds and little of cover two. We did role coverages. We did a variety of everything.”

On thoughts of picking Vontae Davis in the first round and if he was surprised that the team chose another cornerback: “I definitely wasn’t surprised. Myself and my agent knew the Dolphins were a team that definitely liked me. It was a matter of when and where. They picked me and I am ready to get to work.”

On his special teams experience: “That is something we did day one in Utah. When you walk onto campus the first thing they preach is special teams. Where ver I am needed, I am willing to compete and try to earn a spot on the field.”

On what impressed him about Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano: “Check out their backgrounds. They are two coaches that definitely know what they are doing and they know how to bring out the best in their players. I just can’t wait to get in and get under their guidance and see how far they can take me.”

On familiarity with any of the players on the Dolphins roster: “Not personally, but I do know a little bit about the roster.”

On his experience on the draft process and talking to Bill Parcells and the coaching staff on his visit: “We had a brief conversation. I just met him and he was a good guy. He said he looked forward to seeing me on film and seeing what I had to offer. I talked to the coaches and they liked me and had great things to say about me. I just can’t wait to get down there and prove them right by making this pick.”

On if he is a tough player: “Definitely. If you talk to my former Coach (Kyle Whittingham) and that is the first thing he preaches; toughness. I just can’t wait to come in and prove it to everybody.”
On what he needs to work on: “As a defensive back you have to work on your breaks and your quickness. I am a bigger guy, so I can definitely work on my quickness when it comes to guarding those smaller wide receivers

i hope this kid works out i feel like he is the x factor.. im hoping he isnt another jason allen, im pretty excited about davis too..

i'm buying this jersey...
i've been preaching his name for half a year now..
his height will help us win a superbowl

I like this guy, I actually called this pic on draft day, a few minutes after Davis was selected. If they can polish this guy up, he could be dangerous.

I really like Sean Smith and am excited to see what he brings to the table!! However, I highly doubt his height is gunna win us a superbowl.

I was thinking the same thing...Very genaric

Dude, that was a conference call interview JUST after he got drafted!!! You don't think he was excited and nervous. It's not like he had time to type out his answers.

Him saying things like "I'm ready" and "I just can't wait" repeatidly tell me that he is genuinely excited to be a Miami Dolphin. What is wrong with that?

In a few years he might be the face of this secondary. No disrespect to Vontae but Smith is going to be the steal of the draft. I hope
