I have to admit I was not a firm believer in drafting Brady Quinn with the #9 pick, but I've noticed over the past three weeks a great shift in favor of drafting Quinn at #9, including me now. It only makes sense to draft him at that spot because he will be the BPA for us, but there is one thing that might hinder drafting a QB at #9.....CULPEPPER'S CONTRACT.

Pepp's cap hit is $6.9 million for this year, and I'm pretty sure it will grow each year. His contract expires in 2013, that's a long time from now in football years. People may not have realized, but we are seriously committed to Pepp for awhile. I don't remember any of the stipulations in his contract that may protect us from serious financial responsibility if he is released, but this may dictate how we strategize our draft; so if anyone knows more about Pepp's contract, I am dying to know how bad would our dead cap be if Pepp is released because his contract is guaranteeing too much money for him to be placed on the bench.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to release Pepp, I want to give him a shot with a healthy knee playing behind a solid offensive line before I past judgement on him. Honestly, I do think a healthy Pepp with a vastly improved offensive line will quiet all detractors, and if that happens, this would lead to more controversy with Quinn on the bench and six years left on Pepp's contract. If Pepp starts to play like we expect him to perform, don't you think that drafting Quinn this early in Pepp's contract will only hinder his development as a QB?

Drafting Quinn will be a serious commitment to making him a starter in the NEAR future, and a strong financial commitment as well. I'm not sure we can make that kind of obligation in drafting a QB that high when Pepp's has so many years left on his contract and the amount of money involved. So if anyone has any knowledge on Pepp's contract; how does his contract effect us as far as drafing a QB this high and early in his contract. I'm looking for some clarification because if Quinn is there at #9, I hope we take him; but if Pepp's contract is going to make him waste away on the bench for half of his career, then I think we should draft someone else that we can get on the field quicker. We should only draft a QB this high if we are able to get him on the field within 2-3 years, don't you agree.

Culpepper's contract will not dictate how long he plays -- if at all again for us ...

His performance will ... IF he performs at a high level ... then that is a good thing -- and we have a Brees / Rivers situation -- which we win as well ... as someone will pay dearly for either a known or high potential QB ...

The only question you have to ask, is if it is worth the investment, when compared to our other needs ....

I don't know if Quinn is the next best thing or not .... not as sold as I was last year with Cutler .... if this was last year -- I would say 100 times yes ...

Money always is a factor one way or the other. But I do agree that performance is the most important aspect. If Pepp puts in another year like last year (God forbid), then he will have no trade value at all. So I still wonder how bad would dead cap hurt our team finacially if the worst case scenario were to happen. We are still paying dead cap to Eddie Moore for crying out loud. :fire:

I definately agree with you there. I was hoping we'd get shot at Cutler last year too.

Well either way we will most likely take a qb in the first or second round, whether its Brady Quinn or Drew Stanton is still to be seen. So with that being said, I think Cpep will probably get a shot this season. If he fails or struggles, I think he's gone (if they don't decide to release him before next season). Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see what Cpep has healthy, however the NFL is also a business...if he gets cut...it will be a business decision and because Mueller and Cameron see another qb leading this organization in the future

I agree, we do not have to stick with Culpepper only due to his contract. If he plays well, it would give Quinn the time and experience, just as Brees/Rivers. Otherwise, I would not mind seeing Quinn getting play time during the season, as Leinart, Young and Cutler did. I thought they did well enough. They were somehow prepared to play in the NFL. Out of all the QB in the this year's draft, Quinn is the most prepared to play. He is also very smart, and will fit perfectly with Cameron's offense.

Very true. That's part of my point. Culpepper's contract and health status might dictate this. Most of the people on the board think it's a slam dunk that Quinn will be our pick, if he's there. Pretty much, I think it should be that way too, but there is something that makes me wonder, that the concerns I mentioned earlier may deter us from picking a QB that early even if Quinn is there. I guess this is where Terry Shea will make his money this year.

You're right about one thing, I'm sure we will draft a QB this year, it just may not be Quinn, even if he is there:nailbiter: . We might pass on Quinn and go after Smith or Stanton in the third round. Any thoughts?

You guys are missing my point. I probably didn't come across clear enough because I was rambling a little bit. I'm not saying that we have to stay committed to his contract, I'm saying that his health status and contract may dictate how early we decide to draft a QB.

I know we are going to draft a QB, that's Mueller M.O. We just might not draft Quinn like everyone is getting their mind set on (including me).

It still shocks the hell out of me to read that Dolfans are having a serious debate on whether or not to draft Brady Quinn. It seems ironic is all.

With all the QB problems we've had due to the failure of not drafting and tutoring a replacement for Marino, it seems nuts to me. Sometimes I feel like I belong in an asylum and you guys are the ones that are sane because for the love of everything that's holy, how could there actually exist more than 5 of you out there against drafting Quinn in the highly unlikely scenario that the top 5 QB falls to us?

Have I percieved the events of the last several years incorrectly? Have I finally smoked way too much pot? I mean... :laughter of a mental patient: ...what does Brady Quinn's potential even have to do with anything?

Top 5 QB falls...
Team has had troubles since failing to draft one...
BLAM! Draft the QB.

Why is it that so complicated?

You are starving....
You've done a horrendous job of storing food for the winter...
A lobster dish falls upon your lap...
Gee, what to do(sarcasm)?

The fact that the lobster may be old and taste like *** has nothing to do with the fact that you are OBLIGATED TO TAKE THE FREAKIN MEAL AND BE THANKFUL THAT IT WAS AVAILABLE FOR THE TAKING.

I am finally convinced that even if Dan Marino where to come back and play for Miami performing at his usual hall of fame level, with Ricky Williams taking dive plays to the house as he use to, while McDuffie finds a miracle cure for his turf toe and suits up as well, plus our D playing as stout as always, you'd people still find something to piss and moan about: "Yeah but, what about our cheerleaders? They don't do backflips when we score touchdowns. Let's draft one at 9 over Brady Quinn."

I really hope you are not referring to me, because if you go back and read my posts, you would see that I am in favor of drafting Quinn. I've mentioned it at least three times that I am.

Who was questioning his potential or ability?

You still want me to answer the question about you smoking too much pot? j/k

Ok, put the blunt down and slowly walk away. Talk about taking things way out of context. Maybe that pot did kill too many brain cells. You are having a completely different conversation. A QB WILL GET DRAFTED, IT MAY NOT BE QUINN IS ALL I AM SAYING. I'm hoping we draft Quinn for the umpteenth time, it just may not happen for various reasons that I've been stating.

BTW, Mueller loves to draft QBs, just not in the first round, but once again I have to reiterate for some people, I hope he does draft a QB in the first round this time.

They passed a rule which would allow Culpeppers dead cap to be spread over two years I believe if we released him.Im not exactly sure of the specifics but someone here will prolly be able to expand on this. IMO we might go with Harrington and Lemon if we are going for Quinn and Culpepper might be the odd man out due to his salary and his health risks.

I got off topic a bit, yes, but even you started in on how you were on the fence with Quinn but now you're not and another poster was also in the same "Sorta, kinda..." realm and it just blows my mind. There shouldn't be any debate. If Quinn falls to Miami, he's our #9 pick end of discussion.

Why do you get so defensive though? Obviously, if the shoe doesn't fit you can't wear it so if my comments don't apply to you then guess what? They don't apply to you.

His potential and ability are questioned all the time hence the reason I needed to state that anyone about to debate me with more of the following shouldn't because it makes no difference: beggers can't be choosers(corny cliche but it'll do).

PS, I will never put the blunt down. I'm in love with Mary Jane. She's my main thang.:D

I agree with you. I'm hoping if Quinn is there that we do take him. There are a lot of reasons why it might not happen, so I decided to play devil's advocate in this thread. It gets boring before combine, sometimes you have to change things up.

It's cool man. I have no gripes. I got defensive because I thought my words were being taken out of context.

Yeah, it seems Quinn is this years Leinart, as far as detractors are concerned. I do agree he is the most NFL ready QB in this year's draft bar none.

:ricky: One love.

IF Quinn is available, there's a very, very strong chance we take him. I don't see how that creates a dilemma though. If Daunte is healthy and ready, and comes back from his injury to play well, Quinn gets to learn the system from the ground up, hopefully insuring success when he takes over the reins down the road. If Culpepper isn't ready, and Quinn isn't ready, then Lemon starts. No real issue, though the media will certainly create one as soon as possible.

Thanks Sleek. I'm curious on how this could effect us. Gotta have all corners covered, you know. :cooldude:

:sidelol: Good stuff.

I doubt Quinn will fall. I don't think even Millen is dumb enough to pass on the most ready NFL QB in the draft since Manning for 35 year old John Kitna.

But yah gotta have faith.
