Ok I know this is another qb thread. I just couldnt respond top more ridiculous cut AJ threads. If we cut AJ we had better sign both Couch and Davey because Gus should be cut as well. AJ had a bad game, yes. But Gus threw 3 passes, hardly enough to wipe out the poor play as a starter this preseason. My thoughts on each qb. In teh order they should be on teh depth chart. I will also give my reasons why.

Frerotte - He is a vet, he wont rattle, he wont succumb to pressure. Players seem to have confidence in him. He needs to manage teh game and make some plays when needed.

Sage - Too bad he didnt have a shot in preseason to see what he could do against the 1st team, if he had he would have been my pick to start. Has teh arm, seems to have the confidence, was accurate all preseason. Playing against third team all preseason doesnt show enough to start right now IMO.

AJ - I cant put into words how disappointed I am. AJ has talent, but it seems when the pressure is on for him to perform, he falters. I havent seen teh game, so this is qualified, but I dont know whether he was pressing too hard to produce or was nervous or what, but as a qb, a starter at that, you cant get rattled, by pressure from teh defense, pressure to perform by teh coaches, etcc. You have to be cool. I didnt see that in teh hilites nor teh stats. He may have even felt that the odds were against him and he wasnt who they wanted to win the job, but that doesnt matter, as a qb you have to be able to put that of your head and produce.

Overrall, I think Sage should get some reps with teh 1st team in practice, not 50/50 you cant do that at this point, Gus needs teh reps to prepare, but some so that you can get a sense of how he would perform if Gus falters. Like I said Gus has done nothing to show he is or will be a solid starter. He wins by default.

giving Sage reps with the 1st team in pratice at this point is a waste. They have been in camp since early July and he hasn't taken any with them yet. Starting now would be idiotic.

Yeah I agree it is not what you want. The backup normally gets 10 to 20 % of teh reps anyway, I am just saying go with the max reps you would give the backup, give some with the 1st team and see how he plays against the 1st defense. Gus hasnt inspired anything to say he should have the starters job locked thru teh season no matter what.

Guys.....let's try to keep a little perspective here. We are all riled up and in a fury because Feeley had one bad game. There was little gameplanning done in this game, because we play Atlanta later this season. AJ did play poorly, but he is not going to drop to 3rd string, and the coaching staff is not going to cut him. Sage will never be a good starting QB, he has had the opportunity to impress for 3 or 4 years and he has not done enough to warrant any more than a backup position. The biggest thing we need from our QB is to manage the game without losing it. Gus and AJ had been pretty successful at that until tonight for AJ. And I still think that the INT was not all AJs fault, the receiver never turned and looked for the football until it was too late. But it was definitely a poor decision. I think AJ was pressing alot because he believed this was his opportunity to win the starting job. It appears to now be Gus' job and he appears to be the best choice for what we need. He may not win a game for us, but he will probably not lose a game for us either. We will play a lot of close games this year just like last year, but hopefully our new veteran additions and the mental toughness that Saban relies on will help that translate into a few more wins.
