But finding a new starting quarterback to replace incumbent Gus Frerotte could be tricky with Minnesota's Daunte Culpepper seemingly in limbo and San Diego's Drew Brees revealing Friday that he might not be able to play in 2006 while recovering from shoulder surgery.
A source said the Dolphins were still contemplating Friday night whether to pursue Brees or Culpepper, who was offered by the Vikings in a trade.
Minnesota failed to deal Culpepper on Friday after aggressively shopping him to several suitors, including Oakland. Culpepper, who asked the Vikings to trade or release him in an email he sent Wednesday to Minnesota media members, may now remain with the team until later this month when he is due to collect a $6 million roster bonus.
Brees, though, may have hurt his market value Friday by telling the Associated Press that in a worst-case scenario he would miss this season recovering from a procedure he underwent in early January to fix a rotator cuff tear. Brees also acknowledged he might not be ready to start the season but that he is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation, which is a claim recently corroborated by the doctor who performed the surgery.
Even with uncertainty surrounding his health, a source said New Orleans is expected to make a strong push for Brees. The Dolphins also may be wary of offering Brees a large sum of guaranteed money because of trepidation about his shoulder.
