POLL: QBs Drafted to be back ups?

THis is being argued in anohter thread. My argument is that teams draft QBs in the later round to BE BACKUPS. The coaches/GMs have no real intentions of this guy ever making it past 2nd string. He is drafted for the intentions of only being a backup. THere are plenty of examples.
The other side of the argument is that NO team would ever draft a QB without the intention that the QB will eventually be a starter. I say QBs, like any other position, can be drafted for depth. SOme Teams need backs ups. I mean look at us. We have 3 of them. :D So lets see what everyone thinks....

You shouldn't really draft a player if your best expectations are for him to be a career back-up.

If that is a coaches and GMs way of thinking, then they should shorten the draft to 3 rounds. Because through 7 rounds their will be plenty of career backups. From QB on down.

The other rounds are to take chances. Many of them don't get past backup, but the coach must have seen something that told them there was a possibily of them being good.

thats funny, because Reid drafted AJ to backup McNabb....there was never any intention for him to start over Donovan....they drafted him with the intention that god forbid Donovan and Koy went down, they'd have someone who knew the WCO and wouldn't lose the game for them

It's funny because I can name quite a few who were drafted this year that, unless they absolutely set the world on fire, are going to be carrying a clipboard for many years to come.

I can see teams drafting players at other positions to be back-ups or to fill the roster spots, but not QB, it is too high profile of a position. That's why you can probably name more back-up QB's than you can OL or DT's.

why was a guy like ragone drafted? seems to me like he was drafted to back up carr. people might say he was drafted to trade for future picks, but behind carr, how is he gonna prove himself as starting material?

I voted yes. I think teams draft players for depth wich is essentially drafting them to be backups. Of course you hope they turn out to be the next gem but realistically you know that the if the player you are drafting in the 7th round turns out to be a solid second stringer you've done well.

Yes. Look at Ray Lucas. If we drafted a quality backup QB that situation could of been prevented.

Definitely. Otherwise we never would have drafted a QB between 1984 and the year following Marino's achilles injury, at the earliest. I know we didn't draft many in that span, but likely several. Too busy laughing at Nancy Grace's latest post-acquittal tirade to look it up.

Was Josh Heupel drafted as a potential starter?

We drafted qb's while we had Marino... Enough said...

Couldn't have been put any better. How about the Elway/Maddox situation. They drafted him obviously backup Elway, and/or for future trade possibilities. I also do think that in order to be drafted the coach/GM has to see something special in you period whether it makes you the best player on the board in their eyes at the position or work ethic etcc..
