QB's We've Missed On

Here is the list of QBs drafted that Miami could have taken when they were on the clock since they drafted Chad Henne:

Andy Dalton, Colin Kaepernick, Ryan Mallett, Ricky Stanzi, T.J Yates, Nathan Enderle, Tyrod Taylor, Greg McElroy, Tim Tebow, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, Mike Kafka, John Skelton, Jonathan Crompton, Rusty Smith, Dan LeFevour, Joe Webb, Tony Pike, Levi Brown, Sean Canfield, Zac Robinson, Pat White, Stephen McGee, Rhett Bomar, Nate Davis, Tom Brandstater, Mike Teel, Keith Null, Curtis Painter, Kevin O'Connell, John David Booty, Dennis Dixon, Josh Johnson, Erik Ainge, Colt Brennan, Andre Woodson, Matt Flynn, Alex Brink.

Throw in any undrafted QBs. Outside of Flynn and Dalton not much to look at.

The reality is Miami has not "missed out" on many QBs, most legitimate impact QBs were off the clock when Miami drafted. Outside of Aaron Rodgers, whom might have been a bust if he was forced to play right away, there just haven't been much quality available. Of course, some will say Matt Ryan but his weak and inaccurate arm would probably of done him in here without the offensive talent he has surrounding him in Atlanta.
You sure said "outside of" a lot when excluding the biggest name we missed on. Of course, it's also excluding all FA's and unjustly downplaying the talent of a QB that's brought his team to the playoffs 3 years out of 4 (with the 4th still being a winning season). As for the offensive talent surrounding him, they were in the exact same boat as us. Hell, I'd argue that they may have been more screwed up than us that year. What did they do? Drafted a QB and addressed the line later. Immediate turn around.

The simple fact is, this team has put the most important position in football on the backburner for the past ten years, and it's effects are clear, to most anyways.

Elite QB's are very tough to get if you don't have one of the very top picks in the draft (and even then). The following 14 QB's, in no particular order, are my subjective list of "elite" QB's that a team can (and has been) built around. They also account for 10 of the last 11 Super Bowl victories. Note that 9 out of 14 were drafted with a higher pick than the Fins have this year, including 7 drafted with the #1 overall pick. Bottom line - Henne's injury really cost us (the chance to win by losing).

Peyton Manning
Eli Manning
Tom Brady
Drew Brees
Phillip Rivers
Aaron Rodgers
Ben Roethlisberger
Cam Newton
Matt Ryan
Mathew Stafford
Carson Palmer
Michael Vick
Tony Romo
Alex Smith

Alex Smith is not elite, Tony Romo is not elite, Carson Palmer is not elite, Michael Vick is not elite...I'm pretty sure Vick has gotten more coaches fired than he's won playoff games and he almost added Andy Reid to his list of coaches who's careers he's destroyed.

Maybe you need the definition of elite because you have almost half the QBs in the league on your list...that's not elite, that's above average.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "elite." Maybe "solid" or "entrenched" would have been better. I guess we could add at least Flacco and Schaub to the list based on that definition.

Instead of "elite" how about: better than anybody weve had in recent memory?

At this point, id take above average. Sadly, people that you consider "above average" have refused to sign with us and have even announced they came in just to visit the beach.

Aside from Rodgers and of course Brees, IMO, our biggest miss was not trading down out of Jake to snag Flacco and another pick as he's turned out to be the cream of that crop. Hopefully this will have been instructive for Ireland and he can maneuver another pick on a trade down and then grab Weeden at about where the Ravens took Flacco and Bucs took Josh Freeman.....and there's your "first round QB."

But ALL of them, with the possible exception of vick and Romo, are better than what we have now. And what we have had over the last few years with Pennington's ONE good year excepted.

Most Dolphin fans would gladly take a season with any of the top 2/3rds of that list at QB.

The only QB we have really MISSED on is Brees...TWICE. But this regime was not responsible either time. So...moving along...

Alex Smith is the only one that said that and he only said it because he didn't want to flat out say he was using us as leverage to get a better contract from the 49ers.

The post I was replying to was talking about elite QBs...no where in my post did I say I wouldn't take any of those QBs (although I wouldn't want Palmer, Vick, Romo or Smith from that list). If we had an above average QB we'd have made the playoffs and Sparano would still be here...which might not be a good thing. I do know that the WCO Philbin is going to implement doesn't require a QB with elite skill sets. He doesn't have to have a rocket arm, he doesn't have to run a 4.4 40, he just needs to be able to read defenses, be decisive and accurate, throw with anticipation and have a good release. I'd be perfectly happy with another Matt Schaub if we can find him and anything better than that would be outstanding.
