Ok, here is something I do not understand. When Eddie George was cut, HE chose what team he wanted to go to and then signed with them(Cowboys). Yet, when DT Marcus Bell was released by the Cardinals teams had to put in a wavier claim and the team with the worst record the previous year was awarded him and that is why Bell didn't come to Miami. If I am not mistaken, Buffalo was awarded Lawyer Milloy. So, what is the difference between the player choosing and the NFL awarding a player to a team? Also, what would Kennan McCardell be if he is cut?

If a player has four years or more accredited service with the team that releases him AND if he is released between Feb 1 and the trading deadline, he is free to sign with whoever he wants. After the deadline he must go through the waiver system. A player with less than 4 years accredited service with the releasing team is placed on waivers regardless. Another twist.....if a player with four years or more has a no trade clause in his contract and is claimed off waivers, he can declare himself an UFA. If a player with four years or more does not have a no trade clause and he has more than 1 year left on his contract, and is claimed off waivers, then he can declare himself an UFA after he completes the year following the year in which he was waived/claimed.

Hope this helps.
