If, and it is a huge if, because I don't think it will happen, we make some trade with Dallas for the #1 pick (what I keep hearing is Marion Barber and three picks) I have a question. Right now Barber is a restricted free agent. If he is traded to us before any sort of contract signing, is he still a restricted agent for us? or do we have to sign him as part of the trade? or will it be like an NBA sign and trade wear the Cowboys sign him and then trade him. The reason I ask is because if we acquire him and he still doesn't have a contract and he is still a RFA, couldn't we tender him (probably as a 1st and 3rd like Dallas suggests, and then let someone else sign him and we get those picks? I admit I am pretty confused with how a trade for him would work out.

Well you can't do a sign and trade because of any signing bonus effect on the salary cap.

barber should and will not have any bearing on this trade, b/c he will not be included.

IF that went down, and unlike some of the others here, there is valid speculation that it could happen. Barber is going to get a good paycheck this time around an IF Dallas were to move up and get DM, that salary is going to be huge. The Cowboys are not in pristine cap situation right now. Although a trade involving Barber is slim is does have some sound background to it. IF they moved up and let's say Schefter is right that it is Barber and 3 picks. Barber would have to be tendered first which the Cowboys currently have 2 days to do so. After the 28th mid-night, the Boyz can no longer tender him a restricted free agent contract which means they no longer get full compensation. In that event, Barber could sign with anyone and the Cowboys would receive a pick corresponding to the draft round Barber was taken in.

Assuming that the Cowboys will in fact tender Barber as so far no contract has been signed by Barber for an extension, the Cowboys could use that tender to trade with Miami. Barber would simply need to sign the tendered agreement and then work out a new contract with Miami. That is the easiest as the only guarantee is the tendered amount. However, the downside is that should Barber be tendered at any level and receive an offer from another team, then Dallas would have 7 days to match that offer which could cause a problem if the contract is non condusive to something the Dolphins would want to pay.

IF Barber is traded in a package to move up, look for it to coincide with Barber doing one of two things, signing a tendered contract that has no signing bonus or two, signing a contract worked out with the Dolphins. Where Barber is given permission to work out a contract with the Phins then is traded to Miami and his rights are thereby revoked. The latter is less likely early, but is more likely closer to the draft.

Show off!

Hey, is there any chance they keep Barber since they are probably going to lose J.Jones ? Wondered if Jerry was thinking about trying to duplicate what Minnesota did with Peterson and Taylor ? Just a thought.

I have heard that is a possibility, a friend of mine who writes for a Cowboys blog is questioning why there has been a delay in getting Barber resigned. He is hearing that Jones is very seriously considering McFadden. The problem is that will be a lot of dough tied into one position which is where the problem lies for me in terms of both being on the roster. In my opinion, it will be one and not the other.

Why would you want to tender a 1st and a 3rd round pick, when the team have servicable runningbacks, Dallas is trying to sign Barber as we speak, and if you need a runningback that might be better than Mcfadden his name is felix jones, runningback is low priority for the dolphins even if ronnie isn't ready to start the year.

The only way including Barber in such a move would be a 3-way deal looking roughly like this:

Atlanta gets: #1 overall and Barber

Miami gets: Both of Dallas' first round selections plus X (possibly a third pick and/or Spears, Carpenter) and Atlanta's 2nd round selection

Dallas gets: #3 overall

IF Atlanta is high on Ryan as reported and IF Dallas is indeed high on Darren McFadden as reported, such a deal would work well for all sides.

Barber doesn't make sense for Miami. We have already invested 35 million in Ronnie Brown and signing Barber to a deal would likely add 10 million more in guaranteed money at least to the running back position. Barber does however make sense for Atlanta and getting him for what essentially amounts to a 2nd round selection and more guaranteed money for their 1st round pick isn't a bad deal by any means. Dunno if they'd be willing to do it, of course, but that scenario makes way more sense than the rest.

This deal is not going to happen. Think about it. Even if Dallas really wants McFadden, there is no need to trade with us.

We are not going to draft McFadden. Parcells does not believe that a RB is worth the money. Everyone who knows Parcells, including Jerry Jones, knows this. Parcells also is very high on character guys, and that's where there are questions about McFadden. He's been involved in several off field incidents, has one pending paternity suit, and two other children on the way. And word is that he was at the combine with a huge entourage which really turned off a number of teams. There is no chance we are going to draft McFadden.

The Rams are not going to draft McFadden. They already have Steven Jackson. And they have a huge need at LT for Orlando Pace's replacement. Their pick is almost a lock to be Jake Long.

The Falcons are not going to draft McFadden. They love Matt Ryan, and are desperate for a franchise QB. He will be their choice. They need a RB, but they'll be able to get one in round 2. They think that Ryan is the only potential franchise QB in this draft.

The Raiders are not going to draft McFadden. They just gave $12M to Justin Fargas, and still have Dominic Rhodes and Lamont Jordan under contract. They are desperate for defense, and will most likely take Sedrick Ellis or Glenn Dorsey.

Tha brings us to the Chiefs. Now, they could draft McFadden to complement Larry Johnson, who has some wear and tear. They could also go defense with whoever is left of Dorsey or Ellis. But, this is the first real spot where McFadden could get drafted. If Dallas wants to trade up to get McFadden, it's the Chiefs at #5 that they'll be trying to trade with.

You're ignoring the possibility that another team might be just as deep in love with McFadden as the Cowboys are and jump ahead of them. Or that one of the above teams says, the hell with our needs, this guy is the BPA and we're going to take him. Reggie Bush wasn't a need pick for the Saints, remember?

The bottom line is: If you've indeed ranked a player as high as the Cowboys are reported to have ranked McFadden, you make darn certain you get him. If that means spending a bit more cash or another pick, that's still a bargain for someone you have looming above the rest on your draftboard. Don't get me wrong, I have positively no clue why the Cowboys would have him there in the first place, but if they indeed do (that's what's being reported), then they are bound to make a move that will make certain they get him. Take a look how many teams the Browns called to trade up for Quinn and how desperate Savage got before the Cowboys eventually agreed. I'm pretty sure a grinning Jones got more out of Savage than Savage was originally prepared to pay and I'm also pretty sure that the same Jones will try to avoid being in that situation.

Barber at the Phin's isn't that bad. I would like to see him, Ronnie & Booker in the backfield. Explosive trio.

Trade Ricky away for a 5th or 6th & Chatman for a 7th.
