So, the coach gets 1 season and 5 games to be assessed on? If I remember correctly, he took a 4-12 team 2 years ago, added some talent, and after a rough start, finished strong. Fans were hailing him as the saviour of the organization. So, this offseason, he makes a trade for two starting calibre QB's to help one of our biggest positions of need since Marino left and everyone starts crying Superbowl. We lose a couple of players to the cap, but that happens to every team.
So here we sit at 1-4 and everyone (myself included) is feeling betrayed and disappointed. Purely natural and expected, but that doesn't mean Saban has failed. This team overachieved last year, a sign of good coaching. Saban carries some blame here, but not as much as you guys are willing to heap on him.
Saban's mistakes:
1. Playing Daunte before he was healthy. This is probably the worst mistake of his coaching career. While using a pick on Culpepper was a gamble, it is hard to argue with the decision. It is the rush to get him on the field that is the big mistake.
2. Mike Mularky. This was a bad move...however, I'm not sure what else was available at the time.
3. Offensive Line. The OL got attention this offseason, but didn't receive the quality of upgrades it needed. I think Saban may have put a little more trust in Houck than he should have. Not every sow's ear can be made a Tom Brady man bag.
4. Hit and miss draft selections. His first draft was good, but the second was mediocre.
This is a coach that should be given the benefit of the doubt still. He deserves another season with more players of his choosing to put into the system. If he fails next year, then he can be run out of town.
