Pretend you're the GM, If you knew we would be anticipating being under the cap by $25 million in 2006 would you keep Surtain knowing he is one of the premier corners in the game and squeek by as far as cap room, or would you trade him for a 2nd round pick to save money and have as much cap room as we have now.

Personally I would keep him even if there were a couple of players that we wouldn't have gotten ahold of ie. Kevin Carter, Vonnie Holliday, Matt Roth.

P.S. I realize that it is done and over with but it is just a question.

No, because like you said: if we would have kept him A LOT of that 25 mill would be eaten up. He's getting up there in age too.

We need to draft a good corner sometime soon.

The cap room we gained(and the signings that have and will follow) is worth more than Surtain alone IMO, especially considering how the league is slowly chipping away at the effectiveness of CB's.

i loved pat, but the FUTURE is what we need to worry about, and were in good shape as far as money goes.

Pat is something special and he was really good for us for a long time, but the future of the franchise is more important and $25 million is a lot of cap room.

I agree 100%, Surtain was my favorite player but it was his time to go.

If we were in a different situation i wouldn't make the trade, but since we are in a somewhat rebuilding phase the youth movement is more important than an aging CB, granted he is great by the time we are ready to make a superbowl run surtain is no longer the same guy he is/was(2-3 years away)

I loved watching Surt while he was here but we needed to deal him to ensure ourselves enough cap room to be able to sign Ronnie. One of the downfalls of picks so high is that you have to plunk down a hefty chunk of change for an unproven guy which ronnie was at that point. Without trading Surtain to create that extra cap room we'd have been barely able to field a team...and forget about having any sort of quality depth.

Surt deserved to be on a team that felt it was 1 piece away and Saban needed the cap space to turn over 20 players from last years roster. It worked for both teams.
