First of all, I know this wasn't that long ago but I'm only 17 years old and wasn't born at the time. Hopefully I don't offend any of you "older fans" aka 25+ years old.
I was just watching an old Dolphins-Cowboys game in which Troy Stradford, a rookie running back from Boston college, absolutely dominated the 'Boys defense with over 200 yards from scrimmage. As far back as I can remember, I've heard about the Dolphins' lack of a running game during Dan's tenure, so it got me wondering... what happened to this guy?

Tore his knee up while whooping up on the Redskins during a Sunday night ESPN game. And I definitely would not call myself older - just almost 40. I think that was his 2nd season as I believe he won AFC offensive rookie of the year. But he was a scat back - he had some nice moves but he was never gonna be a work horse. Shula made some bad calls toward the end of his tenure. His drafting had problems and supposedly he had difficulty with the young, and the arrogant. Its what your parents call a generation gap.

He was a 4th round draft pick who wasn't really consistent. He wasn't that good. All backs have good games every now and then. he left Miami and signed with Kansas City after spending 4 or 5 seasons with Miami. I think he played for the Rams too.

He won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1987, sprained his ankle in the fourth game of the season in '88. Was replaced as the #1 back by Sammie Smith in '89, the first round pick by the Dolphins.

He now can be heard on the Post-Game show with the Big-O on WQAM.

Stradford was a scatback, small and somewhat quick; kind of like Travis Minor, but a better receiver. He wasn't really an every-down back, but he was all we had then.

That was the 87 game against the Cowboys. They had Herschel Walker ,Too Tall Jones and Tom Landry as coach.

Stradford looked like an all pro on that game because the 'Boy defense was keyed to stop the fins passing attack but Marino picked them apart anyway with the short game with dump off passes to Stradford etc.

There were a lot of complaints about the game passing Landry by at that time and there were many fans who wanted to dump him.

Stradford had a couple of long runs too including 60 yard plus TD.

BTW you dont have to be old to watch a Dolphin "Classic" game.

He definitely had the size for a scat back, but I have never seen Travis Minor have any games like Stradford had.
I had a feeling you saw that game. ;)

Sammie "fumble at the goaline" Smith. I still can remember that game against the Oilers where Lamar Lathon hit Sammie at the 1 yd line and caused a fumble that Chris Dishman recovered.

Ah the memories!!

we've had a lot of decent backs but they all ended up learning how to run into piles of defenders somehow. stradford would be a name that i wouldve never remembered if you didnt bring him up. i remember avery, jabbar, s.smith and a few others but not stradford. but i remember him being a decent back.

I forget. Was that Sammie's first goalline fumble or the second in that game. :fire: I can still hear the chants "Sammie Sucks, Sammie Sucks". That may have been the worst day in Dolphin's history (besides the day we hired DW that is). :yell:

LOL! I just watched John Avery the other day in the CFL.

"Snortin' Sammy"

That was his first goaline fumble. After that it happened every week.

Dont you just miss the good old days!
