My Question is now if you are pursueing Carlile and also where looking at Lehr.

Not to mention the major cuts from your OLINE.

Does this mean maybe MIA is moving from the roadgrader type of lineman and moving to smaller athletic that run a zone blocking scheme.

I mean that is what DEN is great at.......

And ATL ran that scheme last year as well.

What are yout thoughts?

EDIT: Not to mention I think SD ran a zone blocking scheme as well.

interesting thought...I dont know for sure but aquiring two guys who have expirence with zone blocking (neither of which are officially on our team yet) means the change isnt coming anytime soon.

Agreed, But this might give you a little insite on what Oline you may be looking at in the draft.

And I know your OLine coach is one of the best, and from what I understand he knows the zone blocking scheme pretty well too.

I do not know if Ronnie is a zone blocking type of runner, Do not know much about his vision, that and cut back ability are the type of RBs that fit that scheme too.

Ronnie's biggest downfall thus far is his vision...If he improves on his vision and can stop hesitating in the backfield he is going to be great...So as of right now i would say zone blocking doesnt favor Ronnie Browns skills..

Understand, and it I also think it will take longer to impliment than just this year, because you have to find the players on the Oline that can do it.

That should give Ronnie time to improve his vision

Not necessarily smaller but definitely the more athletic type of linemen. Houck seems to like his players big with long arms who can really get after defenders.

I don't think is vision is that bad. It is about average for a runningback I'd say. It's hard not to hesitate in the backfield when the line can't block, near the middle/end part of the season when Shelton started playing well at RG you saw no hesitation from Ronnie at all. My guess is that it has to do with the blocking.

The reason Ronnie isn't meant for a zone blocking scheme IMO is that he isn't a quick cutback type runner. He is the 'make one guy miss, break a tackle or two' type guy that just lowers his head and bangs guys around.

Yeah agreed, on the smaller, but normally if you are a little smaller you are more athletic. Unless you are one of those freaks and then they are normally First round talent as well.

I personally like athletic Oline there is so much more that you can do than just haveing 6 online that really only can move forward.

I'm not sure if it's vision, decision making or his trust in the o-line. When he returned after his broken hand, he was much more decisive and trusted his linemen to make their blocks and it showed in his production.

I agree wholeheartedly.

The road-grader type of line dominated the NFL several years ago but is no longer that effective. The mulitple front/hybrid defenses, stunts, zone blitzes, and edge rushers put more of a premium on mobility over size. Hadnot is OK as long as he is on the ball, but we need more mobile guards and tackles if we're going to improve our pass protection.

One of the theories that I've seen about why there are so many more great DEs than there are great, even good, OTs is that most DEs are about 15-25 pounds lighter than OTs, so as a group, the DEs are lighter than OTs, and that means many more are faster. It's awfully hard to find a fast-on-his-feet 300 pounder! :D

Twenty plus years ago, the disparity between the linemen was much less and there were probably as many great OTs as there were DEs.

Besides Matt Lehr having played center a few games in his career, I hope our lack of pursuing a center, backup or starting, is an indication that Ryan Kalil is one of our Draft Day targets. This is a guy I wouldn't mind seeing Miami trading up to draft. He's very athletic and I loved watching him go up against Tank Tyler during Senior Bowl week and beating him every way you could imagine. Plus his athleticism was great. The drill where the center kicks out and tries to chip/block the blitzer from the outside was great. Kalil looked very agile and athletic, something Rex Hadnot is not.

In general, aren't linemen getting to be ridiculously and unhealthily big anyway? I know that's not exactly news but does anyone know of any stats showing the amount of injuries suffered by bigger and smaller linemen? I wouldn't be at all surprised if smaller guys had better injury histories.

I wonder how good Ronnie Brown could be if he had any confidence in his offensive line? I really think our offensive line will improve with Cameron and Mueller and Ronnie Browns game will improve also.
