I'm not clued up as to how the coaching/staffing system works, but would we get any compensation for Linehan leaving? The Chiefs 'traded' for Herm Edwards, so can't we 'trade' Linehan considering he's under contract??

No, there is no compensation for an assitant getting promoted to a head coaching position...

It is different. The Jets get compensation because Herm was a head coach and went to another team to hold the same job title. Linehan is getting an upgrade by going from coordinator to head coach. We don't get anything.

It's really a pity that it works this way. In the end, it should pretty much even out. Still, I would at least like it if a team could prevent an assistant under contract from leaving to become the head coach of a team in the division.

actually, a team interested in a coach under contract still must get permission from that team to talk to the individual they're interested in... and a team can deny access to a coach under contract.. Jon Gruden did that 2 or 3 years ago with some of the coaches on his staff..

compensation is only for HC under contract, not assistants/coordinators, If an assistant goes to another team as an assistant then there is no compensation in that case either....

I feel the same way but I don't know how the the assistants contracts are worded. I think Saban could probably keep him from interviewing with teams if push came to shove, as long as he was under contract.
