I went back through the draft and looked at who we could have taken instead of Ginn, Beck, Satele, and Booker and these are the picks we could have had(as long as we threw in a 6th rounder to move up one spot to get Kalil). In looking at the picks it is evident that Miami was looking at these same positions but decided to choose the players they felt could help us out more, and the only real issue anyone had was that everyone thought Miami was going to take Quinn and didn't- even Quinn. From what I could see here is what happened and how our picks turned out.

#9 overall Ted Ginn Jr. - think Devin Hester but he can actually play a position on the field besides a KR/PR. Ginn is blazing fast, and if not for his injury we would not have had a chance to get him at #9. He has the same type of speed that Hester and Rocket Ismail have/had in that everyone is so afraid of his speed that they actually play slower so they don't get faked out and they end up missing him by an even larger margin. If the 2006 draft was done over again Hester would have been a top 10-15 pick just as a return man. This was a very good choice for Miami long term, and the only real issue anyone had was that everyone thought it was going to be Quinn here.

#40 overall - John Beck QB BYU. This is the guy the front office wanted more than Quinn, and the only way to get him was to get the BPA in the 1st and hope that he/Trent Edwards was still there at 40 which was a pretty good chance they would be. Luckily he was there, and this kid has very good accuracy, arm strength, and decision making skills as a QB. His senior year he completed almost 70% of his passes while his junior year it was 65%, and if you look at Quinn he completed 65% his junior year but only 61% his senior year.

If you look at Quinn tell me what big games did he win over his career? Why did so many teams bypass him in the 1st? How is he going to improve his accuracy as a pro when defenses are smarter and faster than in college? Why did he get worse his senior year statistically, and why did he look so bad against LSU in the bowl game? He as on every draft magazine cover because he played for ND, and this kid would rather workout and lift than be a better QB IMO. He goes to the draft and says he will not do any of the workouts, but later he decides he will do the bench for all of the teams. If you are that good of a QB or player show up and let everyone see how good you are. If you are healthy and can throw as a QB(he obviously was because he was repping out on the bench) then show up and throw and help your cause. Weiss knew that Quinn was coached up and he talked him up because the better Quinn looks the better Weiss looks as a coach and gets better recruits. Don't believe the hype on Quinn, and good choice by Miami to bypass him and take Beck as our QB.

#60 overall Samson Satele G/Center Hawaii. This kid is a guard who moved to center to help out his team as a senior, and he is very tough and can play multiple positions. Miami may or may not have wanted to Kalil and could have moved up to get him, but if you look at the line we are building it is designed more for large o-lineman who weight 300+ easily. Kalil is a great technician and gets to the next level easily to take on LB's, but if you look at the AFC East it is loaded with large DT's and NT's like Robertson from the Jet's and Wilfork and Seymour from the Pats. Pretty much a wash here.

#71 Lorenzo Booker RB FSU - this kid could be a sleeper, and think of a Maurice Jones Drew type of player who is a little smaller but faster, quicker, and more elusive. Coming out of HS he was the top RB and signed with FSU, and with all of the line problems they had at FSU (they fired long time Coach Heggins as a scapegoat for Bowden's son and they got worse) he never had a decent team to play for. He averaged close to 5 ypc over his career, and he has great hands, great speed and moves, and can also help in the return game. He will replace Minor as our 3rd down back and also on special teams. A very good pickup, and the only question is whether or not we should have taken Michael Bush here. The thinking there is whether or not Bush will ever be 100%, and if he was he would have gone in the 1st round.

Overall I would rather have had Ginn with tremdnous speed and can help as a WR and in the return game while Jarrett might be another Mike Williams - great size and hands but cannot get off the LOS. Quinn was all hype and I wanted Beck before the draft and really like the fact we got him. The Browns gave up (2) #1's to get him, and what if Brohm or Henne is there next year and we have a top 5-10 pick.

The main issue I think most people have with our draft was simply that we could have gotten another 2nd or 3rd and moved down to get Ginn in the middle of the first. Most people including most of the teams and draft experts agree on not taking Quinn because of his lack of success against good teams and accuracy issues. Overall we have done very well.
