I know this isn't Dolphin related but he and the Raiders played us tough, especially in the 1970's. RIP Snake. I hated you for the Sea of Hands game, but you should be a Hall of Famer....better than Joe Namath any day.

All due respect to Stabler, who finally got one of the greatest rosters ever fielded over the edge and into the Super Bowl (in one of the greatest conferences ever, the early/mid 70s AFC), but Namath was the better quarterback. And not by a small margin.

The sea of hands game is my first Dolphin memory. Even though he ended our 70's run, I always admired the Snake. Hell of a QB. RIP.

lol, you sir are crazy. Snake was twice the QB Namath was. Joe was a horrible QB overall. Joe got famous for what he did off the field, his numbers were awful.

The Tuscaloosa News briefly and inadvertently posted an item on its website that should not have been reported. http://bit.ly/1HQM3gs

Preparing to report on an unconfirmed but wide and persistent rumor that former Alabama football player Kenny Stabler had died, tuscaloosanews.com inadvertently and briefly published an incomplete story that we were preparing in the event that the story was confirmed. At this time, it is not confirmed. Unfortunately, other news outlets used social media to share the report. We regret the error and any emotional distress caused to Stabler’s family, friends and fans.

Joe got away with what he did off the field because he was that good ON the field.

No - that's exactly describing Stabler, not Joe. The Snake was a boozing, partying, "who gives a care" guy, who only got to play because he happened to be an extremely accurate, smart and gutsy passer. While I won't say Namath was a horrible QB, he clearly benefited from his off the field stuff (i.e. Broadway Joe, the guarantee, the clubs, his looks, the acting, etc.) and frankly that had as much to do with his HOF enshrinement as anything. Stabler, on the other hand, was not so fortunate; in fact his partying contributed to his demise.

RIP Snake - you were a character and a baller.

Ken "The Snake" Stabler is probably one of the reasons I became a Dolphins fan. My dad was a Oakland Raider fan when I was growing up in New York and just to piss my dad off I became a Miami Dolphin fan. The battles they had back in the day were huge. May he rest in peace.

I'm not clear as to how what you're saying disagrees with what I said (and what I said had nothing to do with Stabler). You said that Namath "clearly benefited from his off the field stuff." The off the field stuff didn't make him better on the field, yet it was tolerated. He was allowed to get away with just about anything. If he wasn't a great quarterback on the field, his ass would've been out the door very quickly.

If any of you haven't seen this documentary, it's really worth watching.

Stabler and Namath were both great QB's.Stabler was the blue collar didn't give a damn party guy that fit the raiders to a tee.Namath the playboy party guy.RIP Snake.

Stabler was at his best in big games when it counted the most. The Sea of Hands game was a classic battle between two of the best teams of all-time, dubbed Super Bowl VIII 1/2 at the time and still considered one of the best games ever played. Back then, the Raiders were the one team Miami struggled with and the team I hated the most. Stabler should be in the Hall of Fame (I assumed he was).

My top qb's for the 70's:
1. Roger Staubach
2. Bob Griese
3. Terry Bradshaw
4. Fran Tarkenton
5. Ken Stabler
6 Joe Namath

There will be lots of tributes to former Raiders quarterback Kenny Stabler, who died Thursday of colon cancer at the age of 69, but none will be better than the one he got from his old coach.

John Madden, in a statement issued by Oakland, called Stabler the "perfect Raider."

“I was head coach of the Raiders the entire time Kenny was there and he led us to a whole bunch of victories including one in Super Bowl XI," Madden said. "I've often said, If I had one drive to win a game to this day, and I had a quarterback to pick, I would pick Kenny. Snake was a lot cooler than I was. He was a perfect quarterback and a perfect Raider.

"When you think about the Raiders you think about Ken Stabler. Kenny loved life. It is a sad day for all Raiders."

This is a Hall of Fame coach and legendary broadcaster we're talking about here. A guy who knows a lot about football and has seen a lot of great quarterbacks. And he's going with Stabler as his guy for a single drive.
