This is the part of the draft I hate.
Houston played this stupid maneuver last year. That worked out WELL.
I understand the principal, but I also believe the process truly distorts the outcome.
At this point, if you are allowing the fact of who you CAN sign the easiest OR cheapest decide your #1 pick, then you truly don't have your team's best interest at heart. You're allowing the finances of the situation dictate the selection. If that's the case, fire your scouting department, subscribe to PFW, PFT, ESPN and any other website that will tell you who the top prospects are... and begin bargaining until you have the cheapest offer on the table.
Drafting is not about finances. Everyone has a rookie cap and everyone has to be salary cap solvent by draft day. The draft is about evaluating talent to build for the future.
At this point, you should know EXACTLY what you NEED and who you WANT to fill that need.
But, then again, there's a reason Oakland is picking first. May they get what they deserve and my sympathies for the poor soul about to be drafted #1.
