Trading picks for proven veterans is maybe something we need to try since historically our talent level evaluation doesn't ever seem to work

they've managed to acquire players like Jalen Ramsey, Matt Stafford and now Von Miller while remaining competitive

Not a bad strategy for a team with a small window and feeling they need 'a few pieces.'

When it produces a super bowl then we can talk. Until then it's just building cap hell at some point.
Can you cite an example of a team that’s been significantly impacted by being in “cap hell”? I just don’t see that as being an actual thing that teams can‘t easily work around.

The old Washington approach with George Allen. The over the hill gang.

It's a good point, though. You get proven talent.

You need a mix of drafting success, signing undervalued free agents, and making smart trades.

Anyone thinking it can be done by just 1 or 2 of these is completely wrong. The Patriots used to be very good at all 3 phases. They are no longer that way for some reason and I think it shows in their record.

Most recently the teams doing this the best are the Rams, Cardinals, Ravens and Chiefs.

We tried this for years with a make shift roster thinking we were 1-2 pieces away. Rams are in a good position to do this now. Their window is 2-3 years

i don't agree. There's a certain amount of blend required along with a truck load of luck to build a perennial champion. Obviously, they think they are far enough ahead this year where a move like that will make a key difference. Good for them for having the balls to make the move.

Didn't we go full on veteran a few years back.giving any big name big contracts? That Didn't work out so well

As a fan I would never disparage my team for "going for it", however that may pertain to each situation. Windows of success and opportunity just do not stay open very long for the vast majority and even if it doesn't work out I feel like the best approach is to go all in if you believe there is a real shot.

Next yr dolphins need load up on some offense linemen and some good wr..who can stay healthy...

There’s a balance and method to both sides.

Trading for vets is getting your team a proven commodity vs taking the chance on the pick. Thats a plus for any coach or GM, especially elite talent like Ramsey or a legit QB like Stanford.

However, trading for vets is costly against the cap and you can only do that so long. You have to supplement with cheaper vets or rookies at some point.
Also, not drafting eliminates your chance to grab those stellar rookies. You not only get them cheap on rookie deal, but they only cost you 1x 1st rounder vs 2-4 Day1/Day2 picks. And let’s not forget, many of the Rams starters and leading stat guys ARE draft picks…..Donald, Kupp, Henderson, Akers (before injury), Jefferson, Higbee, Fuller, Rapp, Lewis with Havenstein, Edwards, and Allen on OL. You still have to hit on your picks, at least guys good enough to play.

Additional note, the Rams have 44 combined players with 3 years experience or less on their active roster and IR. They have 15 players with 4 years or more. That shows how they supplement roster spots with their high priced vets.
