Rookie Kendall Langford is currently the Dolphins' starting left defensive end, ahead of Randy Starks
Starks can also play nose and will likely be Miami's top backup at all three line positions. Langford is a monster at 6'6/300, but will do more containing than blitzing in this scheme. He isn't a great bet for production.

Why can't Randy Starks play NT he is the same size as ferguson they are both 6-3 and they both weigh 305 pounds i think starks should be our new NT when Ferguson is gone

Did you catch the 1st Baltimore game last year? That should answer your question as to why he can't play NT full time.

You took the words out of my mouth. He didnt fare very well against the Ravens, but to be fair, he had taken no reps at the position in practice. Early on in TC, I remember the coaching staff saying that they wanted him to learn one position in the 3-4 (DE) before learning another (NT). With the release of Vonnie Holliday, I imagine Starks will remain in the rotation at end and we will add a true NT.

Yeah Starks really struggled that game, but give the guy a break he had never played in a 3-4 prior to coming to Miami. I really think he is at his best as a DT in a four man front. He is a very solid player and will only get better. He played just as much as the starters next year and could possibly get better as a NT with a years worth of experience. I think he was a very good signing by our FO.

I have to agree with that, I really liked Randy Starks' contributions. His story is pretty interesting, as despite being in the league for 5 years, he is only around 25 years old.

He will get better and has made few nice plays but i think he is best suited has a player to come in occaisaily.

I think he's perfectly served where he fits in the defense right now. It might be an interesting camp battle if they let him compete with Phillip Merling for the starting RE spot, but I think his contributions as Langford's backup, as well as a DT in nickel and dime sets are pretty valuable.

He's just not the space eater that Ferguson is in the middle, but I think he's going to be a key player at DE in 09.

Let's just say that's probably when most of the members on this board first heard the name Jason Brown.
haha i was thinking the same thing. he did have to against a pretty damn good center. so i would have to see the guy in pre season if its true that he just got thrown into the position without really playing it before. by the way ferg seems a hell of a lot thicker than starks.

So, the reason the Ravens ran the ball so well on us that day was all the fault of Randy Starks? Or, is that merely the assumption because the other starters were all in place? Easy to blame Starks and say well if we just wudda had Ferguson that day we cudda shut down those Ravens runners.

Based on my watching the games over again on TiVo. Randy Starks was our best DL. He will definitely start over Philip Merling at DE. The reason MIA didn't fare well at BAL was more because he was trying to rush the passer from the NT spot instead of just taking on the blockers. Typical from a player that played DE all year and was forced into action because Soliai was suspended and Ferguson was hurt.

Starks actually provided more pressure on QBs than Merling did last year. Starks is the reason Holiday got cut. He also weighs more than Holiday and will stuff the run better from the DE spot better than Holiday did. Sorry Merling, you have a better shot at starting by beating out Langford....who by the way, didn't impress me all that much after the 3rd game and on....

I like Starks a lot as a rotating player. He came up with some big plays for us last year.

It's not all starks fault, but a 295lbs NT with no prior experience of playing NT in a 3-4 being forced into that much action when he's used to being a rotational player at a different position certainly doesn't help the overall cause of the defense. Especially when going up against a C as massive at the point as Jason Brown.

I think Starks is fine at DE in the 3-4, no need to move him out of position
