...San Francisco for Yorvit Torrealba and Jesse Foppert.

Dumb move, IMO, for San Francisco. Winn is a nice player but not an impact player. Torrealba was just as nice, and why give away young pitching in a year that they're not going to win? This just takes away playing time from Jason Ellison, most likely.

Hey man, can't knock them, they still think their in it. With the way the Padres are playing and the way that division is shaping out, any team can win it. .500 win this division...easily!

But is Randy Winn the difference-maker?

No. Underrated player though who is capable of helping a team win.

If they want to win, they need pitching, and lots of it. Winn's stats are nearly identical to Michael Tucker's and Jason Ellison's, so why give up a pretty good young catcher and a good pitching prospect who's had some success at the MLB level?

Kudos to Brian Sabean for not giving up on the season, believe me, I'd appreciate that as a fan. I just don't think Randy Winn makes that much of a difference to the Giants. He'd have helped the Yankees, I think, for his defense and ability to get on base, but with San Fran he'll have to be more of a run producer.

EDIT: Check that, the team he'd have helped the most is Minnesota, who now has to somehow replace Torii Hunter for at least 6 weeks. That's gonna be tough, but Winn fits into the puzzle there. Not as much in SF.

I have no idea why SF made that deal. Unless they believe Barry Bonds is coming back a lot sooner than anyone else does, they're not a contender in the NL West with or without Randy Winn.

WIth the way SD is playing, EVERYONE is a contender out west.

Even on the off chance the Giants are a contender (they're not; San Diego can't play that poorly forever, and the Dodgers are a better team than the Giants, too, but let's assume they're a contender), what's this get them? A shot at a 3 game sweep in the first round of the playoffs. For this, they gave up a pretty good pitching prospect.
