ENGLEWOOD - The Broncos continued to makes plans for the offense without Ashley Lelie on Wednesday as they claimed former No. 1 pick Rashaun Woods off waivers. Woods had been released by the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.
To make room for Woods, the Broncos released former Utah running back Marty Johnson.
Johnson, who had practiced with the team in the morning, was not on the field for the team's afternoon special teams practice.
Woods was headed to Denver on Wednesday night and is expected, pending a physical, to be on the field this morning for practice.
"He'll get in there, get his physical and we'll see where we're at," said Eric Metz, Woods' representative. "If things go as expected, then he'll be out on the field."
Woods had missed practice time early in Chargers camp because of hamstring troubles, and general manager A.J. Smith said there was not enough room on the roster for Woods.
Earlier in the day, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said he liked the team's depth at wide receiver, despite Lelie's absence.......
The Broncos also continue to shop Lelie for potential trades but have been patient waiting for someone to meet their asking price of a first- or second-round pick or a front-line player. They also are expected to try to recover some of Lelie's signing bonus before any deal gets made.
Lelie has said he doesn't think he can be more than the No. 3 receiver with the Broncos, so he has stayed away from the team's offseason workouts and training camp. He is being fined $14,000 a day by the team.
