As I posted in a number of threads and plenty other people too, the Fins had to go CB in the second. Had to. As soon as the CB run ended in the second, the cupboard would be bare and we'd have Lippett starting.

The FO and coaches worked out all the available guys. I have to believe that they felt there was a big enough gulf between Howard and Davis/Alexander that they couldn't afford to let him go. They must have had Intel someone else wanted him. Not crazy on the tradeup at all, but I'm sure the FO rationalised they couldn't afford to risk waiting.

The Drake pick I personally don't understand. He wouldn't have been on my board anywhere near there. But I suspect this was a Gase pick. Gase was pissed he missed dot on Miller, Anderson and others so his FO promised him they wouldn't let him get past them. They took him at 3. Mistake in my book, but it was a sop to Gase.

Leonte Carroo is a first round talent. He is my top rated receiver in the draft. So is he worth what we gave up to get him? In absolute terms, hell yeah. This kid will be on the field and he'll be a fan favourite.

But did we need to pay it? Well, yes to jump ahead of the Pats who loved this kid. But we should have just drafted him with our third and waited for Drake or taken another RB. Clearly Gase didn't want to risk his precious Drake.

I would have stayed pat in the second and taken Davis. But I can understand the urgency and the preference for Howard.

I'd have taken Carroo with my third and waited to the fourth or later for a tailback. Booker or Howard or Perkins. Probably Howard on balance. Drake is a very high risk pick and it's him that caused the very high cost to go and get Carroo. Reversing the picks would have made sense but clearly Gase had his heart set on Drake and wasn't going to be jilted again.

Good write up.

Howard is a way better prospect that Sean Davis is as a press corner. I'm happy we got Howard, kid has elite hips and ball skills. Great for a press scheme. Yeah he gets burned in college, but playing in the BIG 12 were teams just sling it everywhere he had a damn good season. I think he's had 9 picks and 14 PD in 2 years. Ball Hawk to a T.

I agree with Drake, kind of a head scratching move but a move that I can understand from an offensive scheme point of view, Gase LOVES backs who can catch, Ajayi and Drake are both amazing at that. Drake is a playmaker from all over the field and on specials. He's gonna be explosive. I'm happy Jay Ajayi is becoming the man, people are gonna be surprised at how talented he is and how much better our run game can potentially be.

Carroo is a pick I LOVE. The compensation is what I'm a little sour about. Getting compensatory picks next year makes this deal a little easier to swallow. Carroo comes in and becomes our #2 day 1. Book it. He's a threat all over the field. He's a dominate WR and he's adding to an already pretty good Corp. Stills as a #4 is better than a #3 IMO. Carroo is a better all around WR than Stills and it's gonna show soon.

Caroo's hands look similarly as soft as Treadwell's, with better speed, great pick!!

I made mention of it in VP, but Fin Thirteen has a great record with WR's. I take his opinion of Carroo very seriously. Carroo reminds me of a mix of J. Landry and S. Diggs. Strong, great balance, good burst. In the 3rd, I like his value. I agree with F13 on Drake, though. Complete head-scratcher. If Miami drafted Carroo at 73 and traded up for Justin Simmons, I'd be singing their praises. Simmons is going to kill it in Denver.

I understand the Howard pick and why they traded up… The Drake pic also had me scratching my head. His injury history scares me for a RB. I get they want landry off punt returns but damn..I wish we had taken CJ Prosise hes inexperienced but he's more of a bell cow and was a converted WR so he can catch also.

Never heard of Carroo so i can't really say yay or nay ..

I agree completely with everything you said.

As to Carroo, PFF had him ranked very high. I saw it last night, don't remember the exact ranking, but they were high on the player.

As to Howard, seems more like a panic move based on desperation. And if they feel compelled to move up, they overpaid.

Drake supposedly is the best pass catching RB in the class, Gase probably called for him too

We Don't KNOW Squat

Brand new FO that seems to be working as a unit with their own vision of the type of team they want to build. Don't think people are seeing it clearly. Many moves made this year have been head scratching to begin with and then as time goes on we start to see pieces of the puzzle coming together. I was pissed at the start of the FA but now I'm seeing a deeper thought than the simple plug and play of past years

But success or failure is still to be seen but damn folks don't you think it might be a good idea to at least see what we got before condemning it...

If drake was Gase's pick, I trust that he has something exciting planned for him.

I like every player we picked. So while I don't like how the draft is being managed giving up resources I personally don't think they need to give up, I take heart in the player evaluation they are displaying, but even moreso in the fact that we are definitely drafting players that VERY cleanly fit our schemes. No square pegs going into round holes in this draft. Also we are set on offense for the next two years outside of TE. We can devote next years off seasons free agent dollars, and the 2017 draft primarily to defense. You can see the strategy if you just look. Just hate what we gave up last night. Unnecessary.

I'm seeing lots of criticism regarding the trades to move up.

Out of context I'd tend to be someone that would argue that you want to hold on to the picks, but looking at yesterday I wouldn't say what they did was good or bad.
All it really does is remove the safety net for the Front Office. The moves up show conviction for players that they identified as scheme fits and if they hit no one is going to care about losing a few mid-round picks. All this did was raise expectations, because if they aren't at least solid starters than they become awful picks.

Personally with a decade or so of uninspired drafts that seemed to lack and focus or purpose I don't mind waiting this one out to see if a more aggressive approach turns out to be more beneficial.

I think a lot of people Don't love the drake pick because we expected a more physical 3 down type back.

Personally I Would still prefer a bigger more physical back, but it looks like Gase is comfortable with what we have, and is really fascinated by what drake can do.

I was a big fan of drake, liked him better than Henry as a NFL prospect, just didn't think he Would be for us.

Bottom line of the draft is talent acquisition. Frankly, I think its useless to wander into the murky waters of "probably could've got this kid 24 picks later" etc. If there's a player on the board you really want to add him to the mix -- and you believe it's "reasonably" within the draft position window to grab him -- then you freaking do it!

The best spin on what we've leveraged this draft is: 2 new proven NFL starters on D (Kiko Alonso and Byron Maxwell) at positions of need, an excellent LT prospect that fell to us like a gift, a big NFL prototype CB who apparently is exactly what Vance Joseph wanted, a home run threat at RB and arguably the most NFL ready receiver in the draft.

I can see 4 legit starters and a RB who can be used all over the field -- on teams and spot duty at RB etc. Not a bad haul so far.

Last for those already worrying about NEXT YEARS DRAFT -- I mean take a chill pill and be like a Yeti eating spaghetti! Let's deal with the here and now before we get lost in the future forest!

BNF.

I think the biggest rationalization that comforts me isn't one on this board, but rather the organization's words themselves. I'm SO used to this Dolphins team drafting someone and sounding a little lukewarm in their presser afterwards, throwing out words like, "depth" and "special teams" as ceilings, not starting points. It's like you can almost tell they missed their target two or three picks ahead of where they drafted sometimes. This year you could tell the Dolphins were PUMPED they got their guys, and if anything they had to stop short of saying they were likely starters/major minutes guys at their positions.

Yes the Dolphins paid a big price in pick compensation, but if we see these players deployed early and often that would be as much a rationalization as any that I will need.
