As I posted in a number of threads and plenty other people too, the Fins had to go CB in the second. Had to. As soon as the CB run ended in the second, the cupboard would be bare and we'd have Lippett starting.
The FO and coaches worked out all the available guys. I have to believe that they felt there was a big enough gulf between Howard and Davis/Alexander that they couldn't afford to let him go. They must have had Intel someone else wanted him. Not crazy on the tradeup at all, but I'm sure the FO rationalised they couldn't afford to risk waiting.
The Drake pick I personally don't understand. He wouldn't have been on my board anywhere near there. But I suspect this was a Gase pick. Gase was pissed he missed dot on Miller, Anderson and others so his FO promised him they wouldn't let him get past them. They took him at 3. Mistake in my book, but it was a sop to Gase.
Leonte Carroo is a first round talent. He is my top rated receiver in the draft. So is he worth what we gave up to get him? In absolute terms, hell yeah. This kid will be on the field and he'll be a fan favourite.
But did we need to pay it? Well, yes to jump ahead of the Pats who loved this kid. But we should have just drafted him with our third and waited for Drake or taken another RB. Clearly Gase didn't want to risk his precious Drake.
I would have stayed pat in the second and taken Davis. But I can understand the urgency and the preference for Howard.
I'd have taken Carroo with my third and waited to the fourth or later for a tailback. Booker or Howard or Perkins. Probably Howard on balance. Drake is a very high risk pick and it's him that caused the very high cost to go and get Carroo. Reversing the picks would have made sense but clearly Gase had his heart set on Drake and wasn't going to be jilted again.
