Ray Farmer Article from Cleveland

That is impressive. Good read, hope we give Farmer serious consideration.

Two more I posted in another thread:

There's also a video interview with him in the stickied thread I started.

The bottom line is that Farmer is a top candidate and is loved by Carl Peterson, who's Ross' point man on these interviews. It was Peterson that brought Farmer from Philadelphia to Kansas City for his first big scouting job.

The big downside to Farmer is that he's a pro personnel guy when we already have a few top pro personnel names in the building in Brian Gaine, Anthony Hunt and Chris Shea. I think it would be better for us to look at someone with more scouting experience on the college side, which is why I favor Alonzo Highsmith, Jason Licht, Lionel Vital and Marc Ross for the job, in that order (for now  ). If Tom Gamble indicates he's interested in the job even given his family issues then he becomes the obvious #1 choice, imo.

Sorry if you already posted this.

No worries. I didn't exactly get the feeling too many people read it when I posted it originally.

You had some great reads. Some of these "up and coming" candidates are tough to get news on. However, you shelled out some good stuff. TX.

Don't want him . don't want anyone from Cleveland especially. He is not the right person for the job.

I love it when people post stuff like this- perhaps you'd like to tell us why Ray Farmer isn't the right person for the job, since you're such an expert and all.

Gamble is my first choice.

He has more legit experience with proof of the ability to know and draft talent.

Farmer has some things to him though that might benefit this organization.

1. He puts a completely different face on the position because he is more ground level communication to me. He probably is a much easier guy to talk to. His quotes on players seem to fit what I talk about on here all the time. Fineheaveners would certainly not bag on this guy because a 3rd round pick doesnt make it in his first year. People would actually give him a chance.

2. He would be favorable to players coming in via FA as a former player himself. He would have to be the good cop to Dawns bad cop in negotiations. As a former player, it makes it more doable.

What bothers me though is there is no real evidence of him having the actual experience of drafting players. He is more in a supportive roles previously. Not sure people want to bank on the future with a guy who is green. He might have great ideas and work ethic and understand how much work goes in, but no real experience on draft day.

I like Gamble too, but I still am not sure if he wants the gig. That is the next part to all of this. It is one thing to interview. It is another to be offered the job. It is another to accept. Should be interesting.

Farmer has to have really impressed with his talent finding skills in the interview.

The other thing I think about with Farmer too is that guys like him need to make a big first impression with their draft, that is how stars are born.

you score right on players and BPA at need and value, People start talkin.

Its not like he has to go find a QB and spend most his time deciding on that.

He seems like a grounded, hard working guy who would be able to relate to the players. The lack of experience scares me a little though. There is no specific evidence of his decision making in those articles, just lots of people supporting the notion that he's going to be a good GM. Maybe he will, but I'd prefer someone with a more proven track record if they're available. If we do roll with Farmer, let's hope he performs like his colleagues think he will if given the chance.

This guy is claiming Farmer to be the leading candidate..

3) Ray Farmer

Cleveland Browns assistant general manager Ray Farmer is described as one of the up and coming stars in the NFL. Farmer has the approval of Carl Peterson, who is advising Ross throughout the GM search as the two worked together in Kansas City. He is considered the leading candidate to be hired as the next Dolphins general manager.

These articles seem to make them all sound good. My hunch is that they are all well trained to discretely promote themselves. Just because some like Farmer, come from pretty unsuccessful teams, doesn't mean that the talent evaluator aspect isn't good. It might be that he is good at correctly analyzing the talent but the big calls re draft selection may be being pushed hard by the GM and Head Coach, ignoring his recommendations.
Based on what I've read, I like Shanahan and McAdoo for the OC position and I like Farmer and Gamble for the GM role. In both cases I would be comfortable with either. It's a pity that the GM isn't already selected so he could participate in the OC selection. Let's hope that we get some good appointments.
