anybody think that we have a chance of signing ray lewis...i know that he is old but he can still play and is still a top 5 LB in the league... he also went to um and might want to come back to miami...possible temporary replacement to channing crowder. just an idea.

no thanks...i like Ray Lewis, but i really don't want us to bring in a LB who's nearing the end of his HOF career, and it's very possible Baltimore will resign him so he can finish his career with them...

haha this subject is gonna get beat to death by the time next season rolls around... but no i dont think he will.. i just cant see them releasing their biggest leader... dont get me wrong i dont care about his age, if he gets released id take him for 2-3 years.. the man's value on the field is nuts and even more so in the locker room

He'll either be staying in Baltimore, or headed to Dallas. If this had been a few years ago, I'd roll the dice on him, but now? No thanks.

I'm usually not big on older players who have a high cap hit.
But honestly, I could not argue against bringing in Ray Lewis, for multiple reasons.

The first is basically because he is the greatest linebacker I have ever seen play the game. Its a combination of instincts, great physical talent, and hard work ethic. No one can question his leadership either. He is on the downswing of his career but is still at Top 5 ILB. I would think he could also instill a lot of this into younger LB's we pick up.

The second is as a quick fix. We gotta face the fact that Crowder most likely will not be back next year. Akin also was not a great LB, serviceable, but not great. That leaves the Phins to look to fill 2 ILB spots.

Thirdly is that we have the cap room. He wil probably demand ~10 mil a year. But his contract would only be 3 years or so. Its not a long term commitment. We could probably even give a big signing bonus with a smaller salary for the remaining years, to help us out in future FA signings. Most likely we will not fill out our salary cap this year so we could be able to take the major hit against it for this year. However, this is only an option if we do not sign any other big names. If by some reason a Suggs, Boldin, Asomugha, TJ, Haynesworth or the like hit FA and we pick them up, Lewis is probably not the answer because we would tie up a lot of money into 2 players.

I doubt we pull the trigger on Ray, but I do believe he is a good option for these reasons. I could also see him following Rex Ryan to the NYJ. I honestly would hate to play against him 2x a year.

Feelings?

excellent post.. i completely agree.. but do u really think he will ask for $10 mil a year?

Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Bart Scott are all free agent LBs for the Ravens this year. Baltimore will realistically only be able to sign 2 of them, which should leave Bart Scott as a free agent. It makes more sense that Miami would go after Scott. He will turn 29 about a week before the season starts and after the way this team handled free agency last year, it seems more likely that they would sign Scott, even if Lewis did make it to free agency too.
Its likely that Karlos Dansby will become a free agent as well. He too is a young established LB, and along with Bart Scott, would really upgrade Miami's LBs.
Arizona does have a ton of money to spend in free agency, although a lot will go to resigning Boldin.

His cap number this year, is 9.6mil. Its hard to say, because recent FA salaries are drastically increasing due to the increased salary cap, and the current economic conditions. I would say a good estimate would be around there especially if we do do a large signing bonus.

Cheap...Hell we paid Torbor 5 million last year to warm the pine. I'd rather pay 10million to a player I know will deliver on multiple levels.

So we spend more money on Scott who has proven less as an inside linebacker than Crowder and is contsantly playing outside in the 4-3.
Yea Im sure Willie Parker could fake out Crowder just as much as Porter and at a slightly lower price.
