As I move on from the Fisher situation, I am trying to piece together what the Fins do from here while praying the football gods (or a Don Shula) guides them to an effective coach.

Here is what we know...
* Jeff Fisher is not coming
* Jeff Ireland WILL be the highest power on team
* Brian Billick is not on their list
* Stephen Ross has some real credibility issues within the league

I have said on this blog for awhile that I want the following in a coach. I feel many are still out there.
* Create a foundation of professionalism
* Bring the business and football sides of the organization together
* Make the organization more credible to the rest of the NFL
* Help make the team mentally tough
* Be a coach or have a coach on staff that can develop QB's
* Success on resume'...what makes them "special"
* Have someone that WILL NOT blow the entire roster up. That is not going to happen anyways with Ireland in control of the team.
* BE A LEADER OF MEN

Question: is this job better for a veteran coach or young up and coming guy? I am VERY intrigued by some of the young coordinators like Rob Chudzinksi, Mike Pettine and Mike McCoy. However, I am not sure that it is the right place for a young coach is Miami at this time. They would have to have amazing leadership skills.

Is a veteran coach of the league might be the best to restore some of the before mentioned ideals for the franchise. Would a Marty Schottenheimer or Mike Sherman as former successful head coaches or a veteran coordinator like Mike Zimmer make the most sense in that they would have a steady hand at the wheel. Undoubtedly, they could attract solid coaching staffs.

Help with this. I can be swayed. I want HOPE as a fan. I am very concerned that Ross and Ireland will butcher this selection.

Tell me which way YOU would go and which way you think THEY will go.

I'm not concerned about the coach as much. Just get me a QB! It's been 13 years! Getting the right QB makes everyone else look better.

I am concerned about a coach. Leader, face and voice of the franchise.

I said as much. Nick Saban is a great coach. An enormous prick, yes, but for as great a coach he is, the Dolphins didn't look good because they never got a franchise QB. Bill Belichick is a great coach, but he didn't look like a genius when he didn't have Tom Brady.

Really? So, the coach you get, it does not matter if he or his staff can develop a QB? I guess you figure one will fall out of the sky?

I love those that think the "franchise QB" simply grows on a tree.

Of course I want a coach and coaching staff who can develop QBs, and there's really not a need for the condescending tone either. Everyone knows franchise QBs don't grow on trees, nor did I imply that.

I never said I'm not concerned about the coach. I said I'm not concerned as much about who the coach is relative to the QB position. Big difference. Obviously, you can't just trot anyone out there as head coach and expect results. I offered up two examples of good coaches who didn't look so hot when saddled with subpar QBs. That's my only point. Yes, you want a coach with credentials, but all those qualities won't mean squat if you don't have a franchise QB. This isn't back in the day anymore where you can win superbowls with Jeff Hostetler and Trent Dilfer. You need an elite signal caller to have success in this league.

I mostly agree, but Tammy Buttchin also didn't look great until he had Billicheat.

It's a combination of many things. Too many places you see a great QB with nothing else and he will indeed fail.

Other places, a coach looks like a genious because of his QB or visa-versa.

We need both a Solid QB and a coach that understands how to utilize him, but we also need a coach the players will respect and play for and one whom can manage a game..all aspects of the game.

Oh, a replacement at OLB and RT would also go a long long ways.

I agree with you on all points. No doubt it takes a collaborative effort, but it all starts with the gm picking the right players, starting with the QB. What a shame too that after four years, with all their "corn fed" foolishness, they only found ONE elite pass rusher. I wonder how many times Cam Wake has secretly mother f'ed Ireland since teams are forced to roll double teams to him all the time.

Glass half empty, or half full?

We found an elite pass rusher in the CFL going against practice squad fodder. He didn't cost us a high pick or a kings ransom.

I still believe. We are a few key players away, and of course a coach to understand how to utilize those players.

In the past, I would've considered it glass half full. Forgive me, I suffer from Battered Dolphins Syndrome. As a result, I can be overly negative at times. At least this way I don't feel the emotional letdowns I used to when they screw it up.

This team is making progress though it seems. I'm cautiously, and I mean VERY cautiously optimistic about the future. Grab a QB and RT, and this team makes the playoffs next year. At least wild card. Get a few more weapons past that, and we could have something speical.

......but I dream :(

Who is to say that a coach who possesses great leadership skills and an effective QB coach who really kmows how to groom a QB could not continue to evolve someone like Matt Moore?? Have we given a thought to someone like Winston Moss?

I feel for Matt Moore. That guy should be the most motivated player in the league with all the pundits saying "Miami does not have a QB".

I am not saying here that Matt Moore is our answer or a franchise QB... I am simply saying have weor the rest of the league seen enough of this guy to already label him as not good enough? I too want competition brought in this year for him but who is to say that a great QB coach could not continue to develop him. Why do we think that he has peaked?? Just trying to understand everyone's thinking

Actually, going back over the 4 games I have of him, and studying what he did, Matt Moore looks pretty damn good.
Sure he has short comings, but he also made LOTS of very impressive plays. His mental upside is off the charts IMHO, and that's the most important attribute to build around. A stronger arm would help, but only so much you can do.
