Re-sign John Jerry

I say Pouncey is a lock and McKinnie is supposedly signed through next year..That leaves Jerry who isn't playing bad and Garner who is playing pretty good. A left or right tackle and possibly a guard is a must in the draft...We also need a power back but not sure who's out there.

McKinnie is signed for next year and will cost #2.7M if we keep him but, nothing is guaranteed. He will be 35 and I don't see keeping him.

John Jelly never misses a start (or a meal apparently). That alone is at least commendable, the fact that he does not always play well is just reality. Re-signing him potentially creates one less hole in a place where we will have plenty at the end of this year. Teams exploit weaknesses and we knew our OL was not the best going in to the season, but I don't think anybody thought it would this bad. Martin made it that much worse buy removing TWO starters, ever how bad they might have been playing, they still won the job. If we can get Jelly at a decent price then maybe, if he wants to 'break the bank' seeya. He does not fit the system (???) we are trying (???) to run anyway.
They may need a coach and a GM after the season and that would mean a NEW system.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think RT-Giacomini from Seattle is a FA next season. I do like his style of play… a tough guy for sure but unheralded in the smaller market so may not be too expensive. Could be a Jake Long type of leader and is very mobile so could work equally as well in a ZBS.

2.7 mil...we better keep mckinnie...that's a no brainer

I don't know Hoops. IF he starts, that's dirt cheap but, pricey for a back up. Have to wait and see if we go FA or draft at LT. I'm guessing draft, and maybe McKennie could be kept for a year if the pick would be better at RT to start.

Yeah Pat, he is a FA making $3.5M this year. He's 28 and grades out at -0.8 n the pass, and -1.0 on the run. He only played 4 games, and is now coming back from a knee injury.

Forgot to ask what you like about Jerry at RT? We did try him there but, that was in 2011 I think. He did not look very good but, did not look very good at RG either. :)

It will be interesting to see what the GM (current or new) decides needs to be done at the position. How many resources will be dedicated to the OL through free agency/draft. In a perfect world I think most fans would say replace them all except Pouncey, but I don't think they will go that route. Can Watkins or Thomas play? Yeatman is a free agent also I believe, do we keep him after all the time invested? Garner and McKinnie stick but as starters not sure if that's good enough. So depressing looks like most resources need to go here this offseason so another playmaking TE or WR....probably not coming..

I would like to keep Jerry. He improved last year t a little below average, and has improved this year to above average and VG in pass protect. He's only 27, not gonna get a big contract, knows the system, and may be the best overall option for this team next year.

Last year, he was ranked as the #20 RG, and #40 of all guards. He graded out at +3.8 on the pass but -8-8 n the run. He gave up 2 sack, 3 QB hits, and 15 hurries. He wasn't bad but, after last year I would not have wanted to re-sign him with the weight issues and he did not look like the answer.

This year, he is ranked as the #10 RG, and #21 of all guards. He grades out at +6.0 on the pass and -4.0 on the run. He has given up 4 sacks, 3 hits, and 8 hurries, and ranks #3 at RG, #7 of all guards in protecting the QB. This is impressive as he was injured in preseason, returned to practice just 2 weeks before the season, and struggled some in the early games. In the last 5 games, he has only given up 1 sack and 1 hurry, while looking better on the run, and is our best pass blocker (over Pouncey and Cog).

The other thing I consider is the 2014 needs of our team, especially the OL. Clabo, Martin, and McKinnie will all be gone. that leaves us with maybe the Yeatman project and the versatile Garner as back ups. Albert looks to be the only possible FA option but, will cost A LOT. OT may well be our 1st and 2nd picks.

At G, there's Dallas, Watkins, and the guy who started in front f them in Brenner. Maybe one works out but, not betting on more than that. FA looks to be around the same as this year, high priced or a Lance Louis type. This is assuming that Pouncey has no major legal issues.

So, I'm back to wanting to keep John Jerry.

Agree or disagree?

I would agree to keep him but only as a backup. Not for decent starter money.

the way these guys draft there's no way i'd let mckinnie walk...no way..i dont care if he is paid 2.7 mil to be a back up...we paid that dt last year who's now with seattle 4.5 mil 2 years straight to do nothing

giacomini is tough but he's just not very good

yeatmans probably restricted...i would absolutely tender him and bring him back

Yeatman, who will become a restricted free agent in 2014, , correct Hoops per blurp from Sun Sentinel..11/14 article by Omar the great...

Jon Jerry is beyond terrible!!

We could do worse than Jerry at RG, but we could also do a hell of a lot better.

Jerry is not al all what Philbin's offense requires on the OL. Jerry's pass blocking abilities keeps him as the starter right now.

McKinney usually loses interest after a few games, and he is 35. With all the strip clubs and party boats around, that is an accident looking for a place and time.
