I thought of this watching the Jets/Dolphins game from 2000 on NFL network last night.....although the Tuna wasn't coaching at the time, he was still the GM, and his stamp was on the team. It got me thinking how much he used the FB in the passing game....specifically Richie Anderson who he had in NY and Dallas. He also had Keith Byars in NE and NY. Below is a breakdown of FB's under Parcells and their reception numbers.

George Adams, NYG - 1985:31 rec, 1986:35 rec, 1987:27 rec
Kevin Turner, NE - 1993:39 rec, 1994:52 rec.
Sam Gash, NE - 1995:26 rec, 1996:33 rec
Keith Byars, NE - 1996:27 rec (in 10 games); NYJ - 1998:26 rec
Richie Anderson, NYJ - 1997:26 rec, 1999:29 rec; DAL - 2003:69 rec, 2004:26 rec (note - 89 under Al Groh in 2000, with Parcells as GM...aka the boss)

Maybe it's just me, but from what I saw of Mauia last year, I don't see him beign capable of filling this role for us.

I'm thinking that this is where the Lex Hilliard pick came from......perhaps he can bring this added dimension which Mauia is obviously lacking.

Those averages are like 3 catches a game.......did Reagan even get 3 passes per game tossed his way?

How do you know he cant be thay player until he gets that opportunity.

He caught 2 passes last year.

How many passes did he get thrown to him 2?

he caught what 5 passes last year, how many passes did he get thrown to him 5?

It's not the quanity I was really looking at with him....it was the way he fights the ball. He just isn't a natural receiver out there. Maybe I'm pulling from too few examples....or maybe it's something that he can work on, but I don't consider him someone who is going to be a big part in our passing game, like Parcells fullbacks traditionally have been.

Oh - forgot to mention that in Richie Anderson's 89 catch season, Dan Henning was the OC.

I went back and edited my post, I looked it up he had 2 catches.

Hey on offense I like any opportunity to move the ball, if the FB can be a weapon, I'm all for it.

If Reagan Muia isnt the weapon we need back there may the best man win the job.

He was a converted DT and new to the FB position at Hawaii so maybe his pass catching skills are suspect, 2 passes in a 1-year NFL career arent much to go on.

I commend you on your research of those BP fullback stats though.

I would love a Keith Byers or Richie Anderson type back in our offense.

i think parcells using the fb as a reciever was more of a result of who he had at fb than what he wanted to do, but i would love to give mauia the football a lot more

First off, its kinda hard to catch the football when your arm is in a cast for most of the season. I know Reagan got into some trouble, but he has shown the ability to be a great blocker in the running game. He just needs to be more consistent.

Second, with the addition of Dan Henning as OC you will start to see the usage of an H-back in this system. Henning helped create the H-back along with Joe Gibbs while he was Gibbs' OC at Washington, so if Henning is gonna put his stamp on this offense you should expect an H-back to be used in certain packages.

For those of you who haven't heard of an H-back, its a hybrid position that combines the qualities of a FB and a TE. Chris Cooley, Jim Kleinsasser(sp?), and Jermaine Wiggins are good examples of these type of players. I'm expecting Fasano to become the front runner to play this position. I think he played it some in Dallas and Peele also has experience as an H-back.

thats why i think hilliard becomes a FB.

H-backs as you call em are the 3rd back in a 3 back formation, does Henning even call those formations? Nowadays those formations are usually a result of a shift, the tight end will line up on the LOS and then shift back beside the FB or the other way around.

Not being sarcastic, just not sure what kind of system henning runs...

so the backup te will be the "fb" or 2nd te on the line during running plays? is that what is a hback?
