I dont know if anyone has thought of this or not and I dont think (or atleast not saying this is the case) management felt this way either but...

I am glad Zach Thomas was released and not traded because Zach did so much for the organization that trying to get something else out of him before he left that would in no way benefit him would be class-less. I feel like it was a nice gesture for Miami to be like "you've done so much for the organization that we are just going to let you go where you want" he deserves the chance to reach his and every players goal, the superbowl. I know some of you are gonna say "we released him so we didnt have to eat the money he was gonna make", but thats not how i like to look at it. Instead, it was sayin "thanks for the memories, we arent gonna put you through the rebuilding years at the end of your career when you could help get some other playoff team over the hump."

Just my 2 cents

I don't feel the same, If the lions were willing to give a 3rd or a fourth I would have sent him there. This is business lol I guess I am cutthroat but seriously if there was a good offer I'd trade him. Trading him for a 5th, 6th and 7th would be disrespectful though.

I think Zach provided leadership and preparation that few individuals in the NFL can provide. He did not want to leave and was never even offered a reduced salary to stay a few more years and retired as a Dolphin. I feel that he deserved it, his play didn't decline last season and whatever games he was in, he made an impact.
Yeah sure its a business, but being well below the cap...keeping a player like this only enriches the history of the Miami Dolphins to have such a great player play a long storied career with one team. Just my two cents

I stated something similar earlier. I agree with you 100%. Parcells has a lot of respect for Zach and I don't think he wanted to dangle him around.

See, Parcells can be a nice guy :) I agree with you, It would have been a disgrace to Zach to ask a trade for him. Its like saying he isn't good enough for us anymore and we want someone else instead of you. They respect him.

I liked Zach while he was here just as much as anyone else.

However, no team attempting to get a return on a player leaving can ever be deemed "classless".

It's not like these athletes are volunteering time playing for a city's football team. They are paid more money then anyone should ever be paid for playing a game. A team trying to get something back for their assets is what you call smart management.

He could have given the team a list of teams he was willing to go to and they could have done the rest. Don't see how that would be something "that in no way benefited him".

You didn't want to get something for Zach because you felt that the best thing to come out of the "departing with Zach" scenario was not classy? I dont see the logic in not wanting to trade Zach because we've "already gotten so much out of him". It's a two way street, we could have traded Zach to a winning team in return for a draft pick, and given him a chance to play on a competitive perhaps super bowl bound team while at the same time gotten value to help out our struggling franchise.

There was nothing classy about Zach's release. It was all financial. Its a fact of the NFL but lets not put credit where it does not belong.
