Okay, so I was just talking to a friend, one that knows football rather well, about Daunte Culpeppers status for next season and the reasoning as to how we arrived there.

So, in this topic, I'd like to discuss people's reasoning on what they think about DC. Give me your opinion on his situation and how you derived this opinion.

Note, this topic has nothing to do whether you like, hate, whether you think people deserve second chances etc, don't post if you want to just write "No" or "Yes". Think a little and lets have some decent discussion.

I think Pep has to get passed his psychological state. I dont think his body was the reason he failed this year. it was his mind.

I think it was both. Without a doubt, his knee wasn't 100%, and as a quarterback that relies on his legs, it hurt him physically. And since he knew that his knee was weak, he doubted his ability to move(as was painfully visible in some of his sacks) and it cost him.

BTW, nice quote source.

although i think you are very correct on his psych state...i do think that we put him in WAYYY too early for his type of injury which showed when he had to get it scoped out again. i was one of the fans who supported saban, but he showed with his decisions that he was not cut out for this. The best things that he did here was to mind the cap, hire Capers, hire Houk and draft Crowder and Roth. Whether or not Jason Allen, Hagan and so on become better or not remains to be seen. As for Ronnie B., I remain unimpressed until we hire a better running backs coach to stop him from juking so much.

I think Daunte's status is in real jeopardy - especially if we hire an offensive minded coach. There are legitimate concerns as to whether he can actually read NFL defenses and make decisions quickly enough to be effective - even Martz supposedly said as much. I'll be the first to say I don't understand how he could be successful in Minnesota without reading defenses, but it was clear he was dependent on Moss and apparently Linehan dummied down the playbook for him.

Culpepper has all the talent in the world, and I think his knee will be fine by the beginning of next year, but I am firmly in the "draft a QB if available" group. It's just too risky to put all your faith in a guy who has looked horrible the last two years; and if he does prove me wrong, then we have a young quarterback to groom for the future.

uuhh...i can answer those questions...no...he can't read a defense...not to save his life...he is pure talent for sure, maybe even one of the most talented that ever played, top 20 i think, but he will never read a defense... just to say that he performed so well on sheer talent alone in "04" is a tribute to the man's natural ability, but the QB brain is not there.

I think CPep will be in good playing shape 4 next season. I watch him play this year. he could move back and forth. jus not side to side. They removed the peice of cartilage that was found to be causing his pain. It was just 2 late for him to make the come back from that problem. Saben put him through a rough work out to get his mobility back and this is why i think he will be fine 4 next season. CPep had problems moving early in the season but man. I he does get that mobility back. did u see some of the throws he made when he was playing. The man can throw the ball. and he is accurate. I believe he will be back stronger then ever. He has a great work ethic and remember he wants to be our QB. and the players all like him. JMHO

I supported saban too. (Screename used to be Saban4prez) I liked all his draft picks and he did more for this franchise then anyone here is ever going to admit. But he made a few bad choices too.

But if Allen and Culpepper turn into studs for us, then he'll have made very mistakes during his run here.

As much as people are annoyed now, I think that we made the best personnel decision possible at the time. The reason was right at the time and supported by most people within the league. The "reason" being C-Pepp's knee vs. Drew's shoulder. Obviously, in hind sight, it was a remarkably monumental error. But, you know what they say about hindsight. They made the right decision at the time, and it was supported widely. I wish that they had went a different direction, because our draft status would be much more positive. But, c'est la vie.

look, I have been a Dolphin fan forever, and would love to believe that both of them will be something special again, but facts are that Allen did not live up to his billing by a long shot and niether did Ronnie Brown. Culpepper is a freak of nature, but honestly, I will take the smart QB over the dumb, talented one anyday. I think dumping Frerrotte and Rosenfells is the main reason that we did not see playoffs this year. Never dismantle a team after a six game, season ending winning streak. We sould have kept at least one of the two, and drafted a QB in earlier rounds for the future. And our offensive coordinator?????????? No O-lineman????????Saban screwed up....ALOT. Mularky is full of Mularky!

Unfortunatly, you are correct.

Allen disappointed in his rookie year...so have a lot of guys. It's way to early to come to any conclusions on him.

I don't really know how you can even say Ronnie Brown has not lived up to expectations. If you expected him to run like LT in his first two years then you probably expected too much. I think he's shown he's got talent, and IMO he was the ONLY offensive weapon that we could depend on this season.

I've recently gone over game films of Daunte and arrived at one foundation for success for him.

We all know Daunte has great mobility when he's healthy. Last year, he simply wasn't the same QB without full use of his injured knee. The game I targeted was the opener against Pittsburgh. The main component for his success is PASS PROTECTION. When he gets time to throw, he was deadly. He even can make some moves to shake the pocket and free up receivers on second effort routes. After that game, our line got progressivley worse at forming a pocket and keeping defenders off of Daunte.

He has a tremendous arm and can pin point the ball with extreme accuracy. As you can see, I am really high on Daunte. But, like every one, I have just one concern with him. Will that knee ever be the same? I say yes because he is a QB and it will have been almost 2 years since the injury once the season starts. If we get back a healthy Daunte, his confidence will return and he should return to the star he once was.

That's my honest assesment and opinion on the situation. I understand that it's a risk, but I think the possible rewards are too great to pass up on the oppertunity. Give Daunte 2007 to prove himself and watch him shine.

Yes I believe it was both a physical and mental thing.
Saban rushed him, had we started Joey we could have won maybe 4 more games. Oh well.

He is a good QB when he's healthyIMO and its not an easy thing to do to come back from a nasty injury such as shreding his knee.

I doubt our new HC will take a gamble on him, its too risky, so it would not suprise me at all to see us draft a QB.

I think you are correct to a degree; i.e. there are circumstances where Culpepper can be an effective quarterback for us. Unfortunately, I just don't think you can beat great teams with him at the helm. The reason the Culpepper acquisition was a mistake is that you can't win a championship with a guy who can't read defenses. We can mask his defeciencies enough to beat decent teams, but we'll never beat the great teams.
