Well, believe it or not, it would cost the Dolphins more money to cut Wilford in 2009 than to keep him on the roster. Here's how it works:

Wilford signed a four-year, $13 million contract last February that included $6 million in guaranteed signing bonus. Wilford, who caught only three passes all season, is due $1.5 million in 2009 base salary. Add the $1.5 million he costs the team in prorated bonus -- $6 million divided by 4 years = $1.5 million per year -- and his 2009 salary cap number if he stays with the team is $3 million.

But because the new rules would force the Dolphins to absorb the entire proration for all three remaining years of Wilford's contract if he is cut, he would cost the team $4.5 million against the cap were the team to simply get rid of him. That figure is the yearly $1.5 million prorated portion of his bonus multiplied by the deal's three remaining years.

Is that crazy? The Dolphins would actually cost themselves $1.5 million in cap space by cutting Wilford versus keeping him, an empty space costing more than one occupied by Wilford.

Did they really spread the 6 mil cap hit for the bonus with that much cap room available.....or do they not have a choice? I vote we take the hit now anyway it falls, that smug little smile of his has to go!!!!

They didn't have choice. Signing bonuses are always spread.
What about cutting him after June 1st? I believe he would only cost 1.5 against the cap this year and 3 the next, right?

I would rather have the extra cost, to have a roster spot for someone who will produce.

wilford is a sad excuse for a wr cut him cause parcells aint gonna let hom play over bess or london

He was horrid last year, I mean he couldn't cut the lineup with guys like Bess, Camarillo and London. That is sad, but I have seen this guy play before and he is better than what he showed last year. Was it the relief of him getting a payday and he got lazy? I don't know, but if he is that cheap to keep since we already paid him, u may as well keep him as camp fodder at best and cut him later on. I wouldn't just cut him outright if the penalty is stiffer. Obviously if he doesn't produce, we need the roster spot but keep him around. Make him go thru the hell South Florida heat this summer just to be cut in September if need be.

There is no hurry. It will all depend on whether we need that extra 1.5 million this year or not. What I mean is that I don't know how far under the cap we are but if there are a couple of FA out there that we try to sign and we need that extra money to fit them so be it. Wilford has made enough to afford a big screen TV to watch the games on from his couch for another season. If we don't end up spending all that extra cap space then cut him loose and take the hit up front.

We have a lot of cap space and can afford the hit. Let's hope Miami can trade him. I don't care if we get next to nothing. At least that way we won't take a cap hit.

Who would want him for a trade? Maybe (and I don't wish this on anyone) there will be some string of injuries in a team's camp and they will be stuck and need all the help they can get and they will trade for him.

Unless Wilford has some type of amazing training camp and the coaches confidence then his dissolution of this team is completely imminent.

I doubt it will happen, but we were talking this way about David Martin last season.

Does anyone know how dead cap money will play in 2010 as it will be an uncapped year?
