Yes, McDonald is expected to be on the team because it would be more expensive cutting him than keeping him. But he only counts $2.5 million against the salary cap in 2018. His big cap numbers of $6 million, then $7.5 million and then $6.9 million to kick in until 2019.

By then the Dolphins might have found a more suitable coverage safety. And McDonald might be playing some hybrid linebacker spot. Or playing for someone else.

Im just going to post this part of the very long article- mainly cause TJ
seems to get talked about so much and Im meh on the guy.

So they finally realised that giving McDonald an extension for literally no reason was a screw up?

If they hadn't done those crazy Kiko and McDonald extensions that they had no need to do (not to mention Branch, but that deal was crazy for different reasons) we could have walked away from both players last month and had more cap space and options this year.

I can absolutely see McDonald playing linebacker this year, which isn't exactly the long term linebacker solution I had in mind. But I suppose you get used to short term bandaids with this fo. Maybe this one works better than the last attempts?

Yeah...I was just yammering about this in another forum. TJ McDonald as a rover makes a heck of a lot of sense.

I don't think the guy who goes bye-bye in 2019 is McDonald. I think it's Alonso, unless he magically starts to play better in pass coverage or goes to SAM full-time.

Small chance, but Reid could last to 42. Have him top 20, but most have him in the 24-50 range, and because of his position he could slide a bit. He'd be toward the top of best-case scenarios in the 2nd. At 11, you'd be passing on better players, but the gap wouldn't be ridiculous.

If Fitzpatrick or James is there at 11, and they take Reid, I will set myself on fire.

Not literally.

Two articles (this one and the "stat one") have both said that the team would like to go with 3 safeties and a lot of 2 LB sets. McDonald and Jones fit into that plan, just need a good safety with range and center field ability. The drop off of safeties from the top two to the next tier is a smaller gap then the drop off from the top 3 LBs to those that would be available in round 2.

If Fitzpatrick or James are gone in the first round, let's pray Reid falls to #42. We desperately need a FS in our defense.

Imagine if they could snag Edmunds in RD 1 and Reid in RD 2. Although we really need a TE in RD 2, I would be happy if it played out that way. Would solidify the middle of our defense for the future, and all we would need is to add a DT later in draft or a FA. But I don't think Edmunds will be there, and probably not Reid either.

Is TJ cutable after this season? The article didnt say what his cap hit would be if he is cut after this year. Hopefully we can get out fairly cheap if desired.
