Rebuilding - A Concept that is foriegn to alot of people here

I get a kick out of people in this forum that get impatient with the staff. The other day I'm reading a post and the person that wrote it listed every big name FA out there and how we should go after them. First off you don't use Free Agency to build your team. You use the draft and you supplement the roster by bringing in guys that fill specific holes. The Phins have numerous holes, so it's unrealistic to think that we are going to bring every top FA and miraculously complete our roster. The phrase, "Rome wasn't built in a day" comes to mind.

I remember when the season ended and everyone was pretty much in agreement that we were now in a rebuilding mode. Well, the start of FA comes around and we make an immediate splash. Then the 2nd, let me say that again, the 2nd day comes around and all is quite. You would think by reading the post on this board that we had a bunch of idiots in the FO and were outraged that we were not going after any big name players.

Rebuilding means just that. Your building a foundation, that means building through the draft. I thank God everyday that we finally have a coaching staff that understands this concept. So exercise a little patience. Next year we might only win 4 or 5 games, but I'm confident we're going in the right direction. Just be thankful we got rid of the idiot that thought it was better to draft a player because of his family instead of what was in the best interest of the team.

one of the best posts i have ever read on this forum thank you:woot::woot:

Yea its kind of funny how some fans support the new coaching staff and everything they do at first and then as soon as those coaches move on they want all the players that they aquired via the draft and FA dumped as busts or traded away for someone new who usually are not much better than what they already had.

That is so true. Remember how Cameron was being so smart in free agency last year by only signining the one big name which would put our defense over the top.

Rome wasn't built in a day. We, as Dolphin fans are so impatient, me included. I want to win now baby!! Of course that is unrealistic at this point. There are so many opinions on how to do this but the overwhelming odds are that we must do it through the draft. Not just the 2008 draft but twp or three drafts down the road. IMO we have been very smart in free agency. We have loaded up on special teamers who can play and provide depth in various positions on the team. Has the overall talent of the team improved? Probably, but not by leaps and bounds. But, the draft, cuts, etc we will continue to improve our overall talent. I have no doubt the Phins will field a more competitive team this year. Alot of the 3 points losses may just become wins with desire, dedication, and sound coaching and game day decisions. 5-7 wins are not out of the question and 8 wins would be stellar. We have a long ride on this bus, no use paying half fare and not taking the whole ride. There will still be growing pains, but in the end, we will return to dominance in the NFL. I have no doubt of this.

I haven't complained once about our FA additions. In fact, I'm very pleased with the way things are starting to shape up. We've done well this off-season in my opinion, and after the draft, we'll look even better....

PHINZ RULE!!!

Great post!
I couldn't agree more.

Daywalker, (sorry about that, cat walked on the keyboard) as an Oklahoma Sooner to a Nebraska Cornhusker, I am deeply grateful for one of the best posts I have ever read here. Thank you.

Thank goodness that we have a front office who understands what the OP is saying. Kudos on a terrific post that hits the nail on the head! Tuna - Ireland is doing the right thing instead of finding quick fixes in FA, de-valuating the QB position and showing lack of patience with it, and not sticking with true and tested formula of building on both sides of the lines offense and defense.

When you are on a message board where roughly 20% of the people think Ronnie Brown is a no talent bust.....

Its easy to assume that people are gonna complain about the lack of a "Non sexy" free agent. Fan is short for fanatic, so what did ya really expect?

From Trying to mimic '07 Pats is risky
[Reggie] White did heed the call to Titletown, and in 1993 the Packers promptly made their first playoff appearance in 11 years. Three seasons later, they won Super Bowl XXXI with White sacking New England Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe a record three times.
The message to the rest of the league, besides the foreshadowing of a certain coach's god complex: Pluck the crown jewel, and a ring shall follow.

That conventional wisdom lasted eight years, until the Patriots stunned the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI. The Pats, like the New Orleans Saints the previous season, had instigated a dramatic turnaround after signing 17 mid-to-low-level free agents. The staggeringly large group, which I later dubbed the Discount Dudes, included team-oriented players like Mike Vrabel, Roman Phifer, Antowain Smith, David Patten and Larry Izzo.

The message to the rest of the league: Don't break the bank for big names; it's better to find relatively affordable role players who fit your system.
From Free-agent dire straits: Money for nothing?
Look at the most consistent franchise of the past decade. The New England Patriots' 2007 aggressiveness, signified by their signing of Adalius Thomas, was a departure. The franchise started its dynasty by signing more than a dozen low-budget players ( Mike Vrabel, David Patten, Antowain Smith) in 2001 and has relied heavily on the draft since then.

Then look at the San Francisco 49ers. After clearing the most cap space in 2007, they signed cornerback Nate Clements, safety Michael Lewis and receiver Ashley Lelie, among others, and slipped from seven wins to five.
Yet it seems that a lot of people would rather Parcells and Ireland follow the 49ers' example..... Unbelievable!

some people on this board are just never happy no matter what we do....we're going in the right direction at last....we filling in the holes...our ST's are gonna be better....our run defence will also be better and after the draft our offence will be better.

Ozzy rules!!
