Receiver Petitions Way out of Playing for Miami ...

Good gesture by the Dolphins even though he would have never caught a whiff of the big club.

Priorities first... family comes before all else, even football.

That's a standup thing for the guy to do. I'm glad some people in this world still have their priorities straight.

never heard of the guy....so in my opinion it's not a loss

I heard on the radio yesterday he was man amongst boys in the Arena league last year. I know, that doesn't say much but he did catch 57 td passes. I never heard of him before either, but they must see some talent, because the Texans got rid of Sloan Thomas (Texas product) and somewhat of a fan favorite. I think it was cool of the Dolphins to grant his wishes. The dude makes $4700.00 a week and could have made a whole lot more if he would have been picked off of waivers.

That's a sad story. That he's in a position that forces him to sacrifice his future to take care of his family. A very mature and admirable thing to do, but you have to feel bad for the guy.

I feel bad for the guy, and yes it is admirable - but how stupid is he -really. He has 8 family members living in an apartment and they were traumatized over being rescued in a boat (should have heeded the warnings and left town early), and then traumatized over HEARING gun shots at the NO Convention Center (they are now in HOUSTON).

I would think that clearing waivers and signing a minimum contract of $330K (I believe) would give him the ability to help his family more by:

1) Giving them something they can be proud of
2) Showing them that life goes on
3) Being able to afford more appropriate housing

Maybe it's just me, but I think the guy chose poorly here.

Well, not necessarily. He would need to immediately leave Houston and move down here with his whole family. Then he would need to find accomodations for them here. After all that he would have to risk getting waived any day. Remember that someone who has bounced around between arena league and development squads is likely not to catch on (i know there are exceptions).

So if, as is most probable, he would have moved down here for a couple weeks before finding out he didn't make the team or the team was releasing him after the 1st or 2nd week of the season, then he would be in a position to move AGAIN to another city with his family.

I know that the life of a non-elite athlete involves constant movement from team to team. But after your family has gone through such an awful thing, do you really want to move them around the country every few weeks to a new home. Plus can you really give it everything you have in a new city when you immediately have to worry about setting up your family and taking care of all their needs?

I think he's right to stay in Houston and work on his skills while giving his family a stable environment following the storm. Practice squad guys still make decent money. Plus Houston has MUCH less depth than us at WR so he probably has a better shot of making it there one day after developing his skills.
