It maybe a dumb question, but why do certain players slide red and yellow caps on their helmets on certain plays at Training Camp? It isn't obvious to me.

To separate who's on offense and defense primarily

I believe it is to indicate an injury status for non-contact. My best guess, not 100% sure.

It is usually done in context to special teams drills. Within a punt team, for example, you will have guys from both the offense (white jerseys) and defense (aqua jerseys) on the punt team, so they might wear the RED caps on their helmets; while the same occurs with the punt receiving team, also containing both offensive and defensive players, wearing the ORANGE cap covers over their helmets. That way, when the coaches are looking at film of the practice, they can more accurately see the RED-capped players and how they setup or form downfield after the punt, and the ORANGE capped players in how they setup formations in transition to defend and block for the punt reception.

Back playing high school ball it separated offense from defense. But I believe Filbert is right seeing as you have offense and defensive players on both sides of the ball for special teams work.
